I have a beautiful pair of Cayenne Fire corns from Zorro of Colorado Corns... They didn't want to breed at three years. Didn't want to breed at four years... Now they are five years old I think and bred for the first time once I had given up hope... Now here's the problem.
The female was a dweeb and did two no-nos.
Firstly, she decided NOT to lay in her perfectly good nest box filled with moist spagnum moss, but instead in the dry aspen shavings behind it. I found them about 24 hours I would guess after they were laid and immediately put them in vermiculite with more damp spagnum ontop to help them rehydrate. There were ten laid. Most actually seem to be puffing back up a bit and looking okay.
She also didn't shed right before she laid and is actually in blue NOW.
And, she has three eggs still in her. It's been about... 4 days since she laid the 10. I gave her warm baths and tried to help massage them down but they don't seem to be moving much.
I DID take her to the vet, and he took x-rays and said they dont LOOK fused to her uterus yet, and gave her a CALCIUM shot which HE said can often help get her to lay, and sent me home with a daily calcium supplement to give her. He said if they aren't out by monday, then she'll need surgery.
Questions... Does this Calcium shot/supplements sound like a feasible solution?
He said he may have to spay her... Is there a way to have surgery to take out the eggs without taking away her ability to breed?
Thanks guys. I'm so bummed. x.x After five years of wanting babies from these guys, and now the female's life is in danger and I could lose her only clutch of eggs if they don't pull through. UGH.
