After reading the possible gender change of a snake, this could be the same for me.

I have no experience, though I did see the breeder we bought our amel from pop all her hatchlings looking for a female for us.

when I bought my snow, I was told he was a male. They judged by the tail only.

I would like to try popping him to see, but not sure what to do. I read Kathy's book, but I'm still not quite clear.

You can only pop them up to a certain age. After that you need to probe. From what I understand, popping is done on young hatchlings only.
 
While it is possible to pop older hatchlings, they should be probed once they are large enough to probe because the pressure needed to pop an older snake is enough to damage the sensitive tissues.

The best way to learn popping or probing is with someone to demonstrate for you. You are in the Edmonton area, so I suggest you contact the Edmonton Reptile and Amphibian club (ERAS) through their phone line or web site. There are several very experienced people within the club that will be more than happy to pop your babies for you (if they are still young enough) and will show you the proper method. Neil Weldon is great for this - you can just take your youngsters to a monthly meeting and might want to consider joining the club. They put on a couple great shows there every year and are a good group of people (we lived there til last year!)

If you plan to breed, learing to pop and probe your own snakes is essential - mistakes happen far too often and it pays to know for yourself (as well as you can by popping and probing - both can be wrong!)
