Post-laying and second clutch questions...

Gralena

Corn Snake Diva
Ok, so here with some more 1st time breeding questions. (could not find the answers in Kathy's book)

So my female just laid her first clutch on 5/20. She looks very thin and depleted, which I know is normal. She ate 2 fuzzy mice following laying. Normal feeding day is thursday...can I offer her a normal sized meal then and resume normal feeding schedule? Do I feed her more frequently now that she has lost weight?

Also, how do second clutching females work? Do they produce a 2nd clutch on their own without being introduced to a male again? When do they typically lay this 2nd clutch...and is there another pre-lay shed prior to laying again? I realize not all females do this but from what I did find reading it seems that this just happens with retained sperm?

Thanks!

If I'm sure that they're going to double-clutch, then I tend to feed more frequently than usual, and with double food items if they'll take them (sometimes I have to offer one large and one small mouse, rather than two large). I like to get as much food into them as I can so that they're built up in time for the second clutch.

They can double-clutch without being mated a second time.

The second clutch will be laid around the same time as the first clutch is hatching (obviously varies a bit, depending on the temp you incubate at).

All of mine who double-clutch, will shed before their second clutch. They're mated a second time, so retained sperm isn't the factor round these parts.

Thanks for the info! When do you put your snakes back together for second clutch mating? How long do you let her recover from laying? Thanks
