question about heating for my corn.

Got a baby corn today. I did some studying prior to buying it, i have the heat pad which is placed under half of the 10 gallon tank i have it in. I also have a lap for my corn to bask in it's light and heat. For most of the day today the room temperature has been about 78-80 degrees F. Do i need to have the heating pad on? when should i turn the basking lamp on? Should both be on at the same time? If the temp of the warm side is around 85 with the basking lamp then i can turn the heat pad off right? i also read somewhere that if the room temperature is 80 or above i can turn off all heat sources...is that true? i want to make my baby corn as comfortable as possible. I'm just not too sure about how to regulat the heating. i don't have a therastate, but i do have a thermometer inside the tank, and one outside to compare room temps with temp inside the tank. can anyone help me figure out when to use the basking lamp or when to use the heat pad?

Many people suggest having a temperature gradient of about 10 degrees between the cool end (70-75) and the warm end (80-85). Others suggest that this is not completely necessary as long as the temperature is around 78-80 degrees. To be honest, I think it can be a little bit of a challenge to get such a disparity in a 10 g tank.

Personally I would not hook up your heating pad if your tank is at 78-80 degrees. One thing I would recommend is a thermostat for your heating pad, as they can get hot enough to actually burn your tank (when I first got mine it got up to 110 before I saw it and turned it off). You can find zoomed 500r thermostats online and shipping should only be a few more dollars (most local pet stores around me do not carry these).

If you can provide a temperature gradient that is great. If you cannot, I would recommend holding off on your heating pad until you get a thermostat (also, try to elevate your tank an inch or two and get a piece of scrap plexiglass or something to put your heating pad on - that way you can move it around or take it out from under it very easily).

One final question - what is your night time temperature like?

more questions.

if i try to cool the room temperature, would that help to regulate the temperature on the warm side? Also would it be alright to use the lamp as the only heat source until my corn eats? then turn on the heating pad to help in the digestion? I'm home all day and night so i can keep a pretty good eye on the temperature, but tomorrow i have to be away from the house for awhile. 4+ hours. I'm worried about my corn. Will it be alright for the time i'm gone? i don't know how to prevent it from getting too warm or too cold. If the room temp stayes about 78-80 for the time i'm gone should the corn be ok?

Thanks for your help.

I recently had a "guest snake" at my house for about 3 weeks. I put him in a 20 gal that I got with my snake and used just a red heat lamp with a reflector to heat one side, room ambient temp on the rest of it. I was surprised at how well I was able to maintain a very steady 84°F. To adjust it I just changed the distance, raised or lowered the lamp.
I agree with Coty and I would go with just the lamp until you can get a thermostat for the UTH. When you can regulate the UTH it makes it easier, and I also didn't like the light on in the room all of the time.
Make sure you put hides in both sides, sometimes my snake eats and goes to the cool side ?!?
