Question about shedding

Wylie

Meet Sparkle... :D
Do snakes know to go into a moist hide if they need to in order to have a good shed?

I ask because I've had a moist hide in there ever since I noticed Flash was in blue which was Tues the 12th but he has yet to use it. I had an empty vitamin bottle with moist paper towels in it set in front of the eyeglasses hide he was in but he never went in it. Now today I bought a small tree trunk hide and stuffed it with some moist moss and I actually got him out of the eyeglass case and tried to get him to go into the new moist hide but he wouldn't go in it. He's in the cave hide now. I took out the eyeglasses case hide and put the moist hide in its place. But I still don't know if he'll even use it, I'm worried about his not having a good shed if he doesn't go in it. But what can ya do?

Incidentally, now he is clear so I am expecting him to shed within the next 2 days.

Mine have always found the wet hides when I put them in there. Just give him time. If he doesn't use it and has a bad shed, there is something you can do to help. For now just wait til he sheds.

I'm pretty sure he'll find it if he feels he needs it. It may be, that just having the moist hide in the tank has raised the humidity enough for him.

I have put moist hides in with all my corns at one point or another and they all refuse to use them, but they all have perfect sheds anyway, so I believe the humidity here must be just right for them.

Here's hoping for a successful shed for you, I'm sure he'll be fine!

Best wishes,

Thanks, that was my question, answered. I have always misted Cheerio at shed time. I don't like the wetness from misting, but always have perfect sheds.
Others have posted about wet hides, but I thought my snake might not use the hide.
I think I'll put one in there.

Thanks Rich. :)

Great, thanks! I sure hope so! I was hoping he'd instinctively know to go in there if he needs to. So hopefully he does.

Yes he did!

Apparently, my guess anyway, Flash did indeed instinctively know to go into the moist mossy warm tree trunk type hide in order to shed! Woohoo! I saw him going in there last night, Sunday night, then tonight when I came home from doing my favorite activity (skating at the local skating rink), I noticed that Flash was out and about for the FIRST time since 10 Feb! And he was looking quite shiny! So I got in his viv to check and sure enough, I found his old skin sort of stuck to the outside of the moist hide lying across the paper towel substrate! It was ONE COMPLETE WHOLE piece!!! Booyah!!! Jackpot!! Awesome, I'm so stoked about it!

Besides having the moist hide in there, I had also started misting just the fake plants & leaves I have in there as well as the moss in the hide to keep it moist, I was determined to have it humid enough in there. I also covered half of the top of the viv with plastic wrap. So I will probably do the same thing next time it's time for Flash to shed just to make sure I can duplicate the results!

Congrats! I was dead proud when my first snake shed .. now its just one of them things that happen every so often!
