Questions about temp for a finicky snake

I have a '09 corn snake. I got her as a hatchling from a pet store. She's 280 g. My first and only snake (so far). She was recently at the vet and they said she's in great condition, very healthy. So I know I must be doing something right. My issue is this: She spends all of her time on the cool end of the cage, pretty much all her life. She used to go to the warm side after feeding and would stay there for a day, then move back. She doesn't even bother to do that anymore. She digests her food fine, no regurging. Good stools. I've tried playing with the warm side temp, thinking it must be too hot for her. I've had it everywhere from 74 F to 87 F. I don't have a thermometer on the cool side, but it's probably a little over 70. I have a UTH connected to a simple thermostat that turns the heating pad on or off as needed to maintain the temperature. Right now it's set for 85. I recently added a UV light, because the vet told me that there is some evidence that it makes them "happier". (I already owned it, didn't see the harm). I have three hides, one on the cool end, one in the middle, and one on the hot end. I also have some fake plants that she used to climb in as a hatchling. She's usually under the cool side hide or buried in the substrate (aspen). She's also kind of picky with her food. She's on a frozen/thawed adults. I feed her outside her viv. I have to wiggle the mouse a lot with the tongs. She'll strike and coil, but then she just kind of gives up. She stays coiled around it and doesn't move. I don't know if this is right, but what I do is manage to uncoil her from it, grab the mouse again with the tongs and tease her again. Only once have I failed to get her to eat it. I figured she might be reluctant to eat because it wasn't warm enough in her cage, that's when I increased the temperature. But like I said, she's never had any trouble digesting. So do I even need to worry about any of this or is she just odd?

I say, don't worry about it. Sounds like she's found her place. If there is a warm side and a cool side, she should be fine.

I'll let others with more experience speak up, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

And welcome to the forum!

All of mine spend most of their time at the cool end, only occasionally having a "drive-through" of the warm side or sometimes after eating. (by no means all the time). If you keep the warm side floor at a good temp (mid-80s), your lass will use it as she sees fit - which could very well be pretty much never. It certainly sounds like you have a happy and healthy Corn!

As for eating, most Corns just want to be left alone with their dinner. It isn't necessary to tong-feed - perhaps she just needs an hour or so with the food to get the idea that you won't interrupt her. If you want yo carry on feeding outside her home tank (I do) you could try buying a small, cheap escape-proof plastic tank (with a feeding tank, it's OK for the snake to have to coil up to fit in it) and just leaving her in it with the food.

Thank you! It never occurred to me to just leave her alone with it. I'll definitely try that at her next feeding. I've been tong feeding her whole life because I didn't think a snake would be interested in eating a dead mouse unless it seemed to be "alive". It'll certainly be easier if I can just leave her be.

I agree with pugsley she will be where she is happy at over the 24 or so years I have owned snakes one thing is for sure they have different needs or wants what's good for one won't be good for another

Sounds like you're worrying for nothing. If she's feeding, poo'ing, and shedding well then she's fine. Just set your warm side to the right range (mid-80's at the floor over the UTH) and try not to worry.

I'm willing to bet that she actually IS going over to the warm side when she needs to, she's probably just doing it when you can't see her (ie late at night).

Of my 3 scalebabies, 1 spends most of his time in his cool side, 1 spends most of his time in his warm side, and 1 spends most of her time in the climbing around in the silk plants and ignores both of her hides....

Oh and I wouldn't bother with the UV lamp. Corns don't need nor want the UV..they are designed for night-time life. Remember, no eyelids.
