Quick Question...

I know during shedding.. colors fade.. eyes turn blue... eyes turn clear then sheding begins a day or week after that depending on the snake.. Question is... My snakes eyes are hazy and blue and have been that way for the last two days. How long are they usually this way? I'm ready for the little guy to shed!

it'll be within the next couple of days they clear up.. then from experience, anywhere from 2 to 7 days...

think about hunidity.. it helps during this time...

Yeah i would agree your snakes eyes will clear in about 2 days then it will shed roughly 2 days later - the light colored snakes dont seem to be cloudy in the eys for as long but then i expect thats due to lack of dark pigments

Yep i think they should clear up in 2-3 days and then can take up to a week to actually shed. I don't think akashas eyes actually do go blue they just go cloudy and kind of white but not very.

With amels its hard to see any "blue" and commonly you see what you have described. A more white or cloudy look.

I can hardly tell if my adult amel is going to shed or not.

yes, my snake usually turns hazy and blue, then about a week later he sheds. Some snakes do this quickly, some prolong it a bit, it just depends on the snake. Hope this helps.

hi im new

hi im new and i have a cornsnake its eyes have turend a milky i think its due to shed wen is it safe 2 handel it ????

When snakes are in a blue phase they cant see well and thus are very nervous and easily stressed so its best not to handle them any more than is necessary till the shed is over which should be within a week or so. During this time they will probably just try to hide alot.

Right now , It will help greatly to take a spray bottle with water in it and mist the cage several times a day to increase the humidity for the snake or offer a box with moist moss in it for the snake to burrow in. ( my snakes love the moss boxes when they are preshed! ) . The humidity will help the shed be a healthy one.

Best wishes

will your cornsnakes eyes go milky if its to cold ??? :shrugs:

No, but why do you think your snake is too cold? What are the temps in its tank?

If you buy sphagnum moss from a yard store, make sure no fertilizers or other chemicals have been added. These might be harmful to your snake.

Funny thing, last time I was in the pet store buying sphagnum, the clerk who was checking me out was telling me how great it is for growing orchids.

I agree

I agree becky, I buy all my moss and perilite from the reptile stores. I tend to pay more but know my quality is better with them. Thanks for adding that point.

Milky eyes

I got Molly out tonight and saw for the first time her eyes are milky.... she's snow so they are red eyes anyway. I am assuming that this will be her first shed with me. My question is how does the shedding time interfere with her feeding? She's supposed to eat on Thursday so do I offer a fuzzy to her or just wait until she sheds?

some snakes will eat while in shed and some wont. you can try and offer a fuzzy and see if she will take it. if not, wait until after she sheds to try to feed her again.

spaghnum moss is the best material to use for a humid hide, IMO. i put a bunch in their snake cave on the warm side and mist it so its damp. the snakes love it. they'll hang out there until they shed. the reptile stores do sell it, but pretty much so, you're getting the same exact thing at the home depot or other yard store. just read the label to make sure it's not treated with any fertilizers or pesticides. i get my cypress mulch, peat moss, and moss from home depot. much cheaper. i use the mulch and peat moss for the turtles, btw, not for the corns... :crazy02:
