Really Important Question!

Hi guys! I have this nagging question (thanks in part to my cousin). She seems to think that I was sold a Rat Snake and not a Corn Snake. Can anyone tell me the difference between the two (besides size). Is it possible that I may have a Rat snake and not know it. My cousin seems to think I was mislead at the store where I bought my "corn". She thinks it might even be a baby python...which I HIGHLY doubt. She'd no expert, but then again, neither am I. Can Rat snakes display the red motley pattern? Can someone please help me? Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture to post yet. I'm hoping to put one up soon, though. I was just hoping that someone could describe the differences between a corn snake and a rat snake...if there is any physical difference, etc. Even a pic of a rat snake may be of some help. Any assistance in this matter is appreciated.

I looked in Kathy Love's Book and she does make mention of the corn also being known as a Red Rat snake which is found east coast near central NJ. However I did a search on line for a red rat snake and this is the link http://www.seaworld.org/AnimalBytes/rat_snakeab.html. To me in just looking at this one referance seems to be one in the same and just another name for the corn.

I would do several more look ups on the red rat snake. 3 sources is usually a good number when your researching something.

What I do when I am dealing with a speices. I always go by the classification name, or the latin name. That way there is never any mistake.

Good luck to you hope this helps.

Thank you! I appreciate the time you took to provide information and/or links. I was under the assumption that rats and corns were in the same family, but under seperate classifications. I will definitely check out the links. Once again...thanks!

A red ratsnake is the same thing as a cornsnake. Cornsnake is the more popular name now and red ratsnake is not often used anymore. Bekah with all due repect there has been about 100 posts on this site about your snake and anyone can only guess what you have. There has been 10 or more requests for pictures. You can describe your snake all day long but if you really want to know what it is take a pic. or bring it to a pet store or whatever , someone can help you if they can see it. My gosh I feel like mailing you my digital camera to get it over with. I'm not trying to be a jerk but someone anyone needs to see your snake to give you a positive ID. Where in Pa. do you live? I know some folks up there who are nice and would likely help you If you brought it by.

Bekah with all due repect there has been about 100 posts on this site about your snake

Jason - No offense taken (well, not too much), but I think to say that I have 100 posts strictly about MY snake and nothing else is more than a slight exaggeration. I had simply brought up this question, because of my cousin. I have found a lot of help and information here from the other members and it has always been appreciated. And please forgive me if I have an ancient computer and am not quite as computer literate as you may wish me to be. After all, I thought this was a site where we could look to each other for information, advice, etc. If members do not care to reply to my posts, that's fine. I've been to bookstores, petshops, and web site links and I am only trying to gather as much knowledge as I can. If there is an issue with the number of posts (regardless of content) that I put up in any given amount of time then I apologize.

Bekah, Like I said in the private message sorry for the way I put that. I wasn't speaking for anyone else, only my own oppinion. The people here are extreamly friendly and helpful and will keep trying to I.d. your snake for ever . I was saying your not going to get a positive I.D. untill you can get a picture up . I can't tell you what you can or can't do. I'm just a quest here myself. I enjoy your posts as I do everyone elses. I know I don't have to read any post I don't want to., but I read just about all the new ones anyway. I quess I was A little frustrated Reading yours when it seems like you could get an awnser to your question in an afternoon. mail me a regular picture and I'll I.D. it for you or bring it to someone that can. I'll even scan it for you and post it here.

Jason,
Once again, I just wanted to let you kow that I thank you for your apology and you willingness to help. Like I said in my PM to you...I will be putting a pic up soon and you will be the first person I let know! LOL!

I don't know what would lead my cousin to think it's a baby python. I've just been confused over the whole Rat/Corn snake issue. On some posts I've been told there is no difference. In some books I've read they're classified differently, but in the same family (with Rat snakes being larger). I think I just have a good size corn on my hands!

I'm hoping my pick will get put up on Thursday...it's been hectic around here! I can't wait to show him/her off...it's a pretty snake!
