Regular and Plexi Glass question

Green Bean

Reptile Chick
I am considering making a few wooden cages for my corns. Since a UTH or Flexwatt won't heat from under a piece of wood, I'd have to place the UTH or Flexwatt in the tank itself. I'll then put a piece of glass or plexi glass over top of that. Now my question, which I have a good idea of the answer, but want to have it confirmed, as long as the UTH or Flexwatt is controlled by a thermostat or rheostat, it won't crack the glass, right?

Also what is the highest tempature glass or plexi can withstand before breaking? I have a BP and want to build a cage for him too.

I don't think the temp that your snakes require will be enough to crack the glass so I wouldn't worry about it. 90 degrees certainly won't be enough to crack glass

It won't crack glass at any temp the uth puts out I can tell you that. Most all the reptile cages out there have glass bottoms and most people attach the uth to the bottom.

If the UTH is directly on the glass it can crack it I've had it happen once. Best is to have the glass rased 1/8"-1/4" from the UTH so it's heating the air and not the glass directly. Keeps the heat from collecting between the wood and glass from the UTH and cracking the glass.

Hey Layna,

While 85* is not hot enough to damage glass or plexi, titus has a point. UTH can overheat if it has no space underneath it to vent. I've got 4 glass vivs with UTH and have the UTH directly on the glass, but have space underneath them. I'd go with Lennycorns suggestion. Flexwatt would be better since it's designed to go right on the wood with the viv right on top.

I use flexwatt in my cages, and only cover it with newspaper. You do have to use a thermostat though.

Much thanks everyone. I am going to invest in some flexwatt. Now I have a question. Does anyone have a link to a post or site that has pictures of furnature quality terriariums? I am looking to put something nice in the living room rather in the reptile closet.

If I were you, I'd follow the link on blueapplepaste's postings- His directions to build a simple and very clean looking two unit viv. It looks sorta' IKEA to me, but it depends I guess on what you like for furniture!
