Reptile Job

Does anyone know any jobs which involve working with animals in general or just reptiles??? (Except a vet). I'm just thinking of future possibilities! :crazy02:

Thanks,

Andy

Well, you could work at a pet store. I have a friend who works with the travelling reptile exhibit at the local zoo (they take reptiles to local schools and stuff). Or, you could become the next crocodile hunter.

Another option is to get involved in an ongoing research project. That's what I did, I got involved with a group doing research on massasaugas in their natural habitat. Awesome job. ...May be worth looking into something like that, you might try looking at some major universities for potential employment.

Well, you may not consider this a "job" as you probably won't get paid....but it's an awesome experience. Wildlife rehab. I see you're from the UK, so I don't know much about how that works over there, but in the US anyway, it's almost 100% volunteer-based. You get to work with native wildlife every single day that you can spare (around your paying job) and you can use it as a stepping stone into paying jobs.

Or, what I'm doing, is I started out in rehab 3 years ago and, since I can't get paid for it, I'm getting certified to teach high school biology (I have my degree in bio, but it doesn't really matter what you study. Some of our volunteers at the center are lawyers, etc), that way I can use my summers off to continue wildlife rehab and wildlife conservation. I've been doing live-animal demonstrations for about a year now, mostly to schools, and it's been great. I've used snakes, turtles, owls (my personal favorites), hawks, opossums, and EVEN SKUNKS as part of my programs!!! Basically it's so that I can teach younger people (as well as older people, I've noticed) about the importance of conserving wildlife. It's a very rewarding experience, and if you can afford to volunteer at a place like this, it's sooooo worth your time.

Feel free to check out my website Here and click on the "Some of the animals I've worked with at the PA Wildlife Center" link sorta near the bottom. Those are some of the thousands of animals I've been privileged enough to work with these last few years and I've had a blast doing it. Good luck!!

Edit: I forgot, I also have this page here. It's just an online photo album kind of thing, but it's got some other pictures from the wildlife center in it (among other things). Second Page Check out the PA Wildlife Center album... those two links will give you a good idea of the kinds of things we work with here in Pennsylvania on a daily basis all year long. We got somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500 - 3000 animals in 2004 I believe and were able to rehabilitate and release a majority of them.
