I would have to say no.

Like everyone else said, it can cause infections, but it can also do nothing. I wouldn't take the risk, but hey. I'm not you, so do whatever you want.
 
You can use coconut shell chips if you want a dark substrate. But I wouldn't use the fine grade: dusty, leaves a brown "film" on snake, makes snake dirty if it gets wet, may look like mouth rot when it's on snakes lips.
