Rex mice?

Flagg

New member
I'm sure they're probably called something else, but my latest litter of mice from a new colony bought at the reptile show has turned out to be 1/2 "rex" coat. Half are shiny normal straight coat, the other half have this sort of curly, fuzzy looking coat. It's hard to tell from the pic, but both types are shown. Anyone know what they're called. and is it a dominant or recessive gene? The male parent appears to have the same coat type.

I'm pretty sure that rex (aka astrex - both names are correct) is dominant and double rex (homozygous) mice wind up being somewhat hairless.

There are other rex-type genes (Recessive "Fuzzy" and recessive "Frizzy" - which both cause somewhat sparse coats, and can be selectively bred to produce hairless-looking mice - as well as dominant Caracul) - but it's likely that you've got a dominant variety rather than a recessive one, seeing as those babies don't seem to have any lack of hair!

Thanks, couldn't find much infor on rex mice other than a couple pics. They definitely don't seem to lack any fur. If anything it looks thicker than usual.
