Room to move?

Green Bean

Reptile Chick
Hey all-

I plan in the next few months, or with a year, to add to my collection by a few more corns. I have a few concerns though.

I was looking at Jungle Habitat Plastics - 3 Slot 41qt Sterilite - as a permanent home for some corns but have a few issues.

1. Will they be able to explore and move around a lot, even a full grown corn?

2. Do any of you know if this type or rack comes with lids or will the space between the shelf and tub be enough for a hatchling to slip through? I have a few 10 gallons and tubs laying around, so I can always keep the newest corns in their till they get some weight on 'em.

That's basically it, I am concerned with their activity level since all my others are in tanks now.

There's been a number of debates on this that I have read. Lots of people keep all their corns in racks, using the 32 quart tubs for adults, and they get very good results doing things that way. Lots of other people say that it's better to keep them in large tanks and "cages" because they can get more excercise that way. For now, I've got the one juvie, and maybe two more on the way late this spring/ early summer. I've got space for two tens and the 20L, and that's what they will live in.

Someday, I'd like to breed. I think I am going to go in between the consensus and go with "cages" (like the Boaphile stack packs) for my females, roughly the size of a 20 long tank (30" x 12" or the equivalent), and racks with 32 quart sterilites for my males. The males will get to be active during the breeding season when placed in the females cages, and the females will have a good sized cage to allow for easy inclusion of a laying box. I plan never to have so many snakes that I can't take each other for handling sessions once or twice per week.

By the way... check out these guys. Another forum user (Nanci, I think) turned me onto them, and if/when I buy a rack (spring of 08 at the earliest) I will probably buy from them.

That sounds like a good idea, I do like it that they're in vivs. but I want a few more and having 6 vivs in a 1 bedroom apartment is tough. So I might go the rack route to begin with and then graduate up to stacking vivs once we get more space.
