rubbing his face on things

envy13

lost please help
i just got this snake two weeks ago the previous owner gave me a poor history so i thought even better it be mine. i have no idea when his last shed was or anything i fed him last night and the thursday of the week before just one pinky. he keeps rubbing his face on the glass or on his body not on the good scratchy rock i have for him (btw idk sex). when i hold him in the right light i see a blue opaque tinge to the scales on the top of his head i tried some luke warm water but for the most part he didnt want to touch it.
also he doesn't hide like i've read corns like to do i've only seen him even try to dig twice he kind of displays himself is that normal? or am i just lucky? there are hides for him he just doesn't use them.

just so nobody says it i am about to switch from pine i just think newspaper shredding looks cheap

Sounds to me like he's getting ready to shed. I've got one doing that right now, too. (rubbing his face on the glass, acting wierd in general). I had another snake starting to shed, and someone on here told me to get some paper towels wet (not dripping), and bunch them up in a toilet paper tube or other small enclosure, and the snake will go through it and get the skin off that way. It worked like an absolute charm for me, and I'm about to try it again.

hm ok he isn't blue everywhere is it possible that perhaps he didn't have a full shed last time or maybe he is late? idk also i have no idea how old he is just that hes a baby and i cant really sex him yet

The rubbing of the head on the glass usually means they are getting ready to shed, so they wouldn't be in blue anymore. You would be able to see if there was extra skin that didn't come off from a previous shed. But the little one could also just be exploring its new enclosure and looking for places to escape lol. If I were you I would do the paper towels like Kalena said. I do that along with mist the cages lightly every few days to raise the humidity in their viv's and they all shed just fine for me.

Yep, he's about to shed which is why he's probably rubbing. The thing that caught my attention though is the mention of pine. Pine and cedar contain oils that will cause respiratory problems. The best wood to use is aspen, if you don't want to use paper...

yay something not tacky i have control issues it has to be pretty thank you for the suggestion

still no shed

still no shed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! should i be concerned could this be due to poor nutrition before i got him i've had him for three weeks now i'm going to feed him again today i feed him a pinky frozen thawed every friday i'm a little concerned i'm not feeding him enough the pinky is almost perfectly the size of his abdomen should i get hoppers

I just replied to your other shedding post - as far as feeding, check this out:

http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50106&highlight=munson+plan

I printed that off and put it in my snake-record book for quick reference. If you don't have a scale, pick one up at Wal-Mart for $20 when you can - 90% of size references, feeding instructions, breeding instructions, etc. etc. are based on age and weight in grams. When I got my first corn, I would keep trying to measure him with a tape measure - LOL, next to impossible! - before I realized that weight is more of a factor than circumference or length. (!!! yes, I know how that sounds! no comments please! LOL)

Mine will have a rub at the side of the viv when they are put back almost every time ... but their behaviour is totally different when they are shedding.

When they shed its not like rubbing along something - with claudia the last time it was like she was trying to ram her face through my finger, bones and all, as hard as she possibly could.

It might be that your one is trying to work out the area he/she has to play with or get at the outside and is confused why they cant...

if you get the snake in your hands and look on the inside of the curls on the body does the skin look like its got corrugations - if it does then its a good chance your one is gonna shed - if it doesnt then it might be something else.

Are there any black bits around the eyes or mouth? - might be mites causing irritation...

Could be that you snake was simply exploring and testing it's boundries. My Blackjack is ALWAYS looking for a way to make his next great escape.

Another alternative for bedding that our vet recommended is terry cloth or old towels. Fold them over x3 and away you go. As a bonus cleanup is a snap and they are 100% reusable

he did get out once which was awful so he might be trying to make a repeat, not gonna happen. but it was when he was rubbing his head along his own body that i was like what are you doing? around his mouth are just "tiger like" strips nothing odd no mites i think he is finally blue tho and he won't let me touch him very inquisitive as always but won't be held

It sounds more likely from that he'll be shedding soon - mine seem to get confused sometimes and rub along their own bodies too as if it confuses them - but I think thats because they spend so much time cuddled up together that they're just checking that its a bit of them not a bit of the other one..

Mine havent managed to get out yet - the nearest was when the Anery decided he was going to get into the space between the lip of the bath and the panel cover - and was most disconcerted when he actually got stuck and needed my help to gently prise him out - I think he has learned from that that where the head and neck may go, the rest may not necessarily follow..

i dont have any other corns tho so hm but yah she turned blue yesterday and today she looks normal so i think tomorrow will be the day she sheds
