Secure Screen Lid?

I just bought my snake a new tank and screen lid and clips to keep it down but I don't believe that the clips will hold the lid down, Mars, my snake is still only a baby so I'm not that worried that he'll get out now but he will when he grows. Is there anything I can use or buy to keep the lid safely secured to the tank? Thanks guys!

What sort of clips do you have? I've used two different types of clips for screen lids and never had an issue with either type, as long as they are used properly.

I bought them from Petco. I can secure one clip on one side of the tank with no problem but the gap from the screen (about .5 inch) won't let me secure the other clip to the other side of the tank. Plus I was told that clips aren't the best way to secure lids to tanks so I rather be safe then sorry.

Ah, I don't like that brand of clip, too hard to use. Have you tried clipping them to the short sides and to the long sides? Is there a gap both ways? I use ones that are more rounded (I can't for the life of me remember what brand they are...) and they work great.

The only other thing you can do to 'secure' a screen lid is to put something heavy on it...like a textbook on either end or some flat heavy rocks (just don't put them on the screen only, they need to be supported by the edges of the tank too).

Sorry I have no experience with the clips you have, but I've used these clips by Zilla and they are amazing. These are probably the clips that Hallie's referring to as well.

Awesome! thanks guys for all the help! A Textbook is a great idea for now and I may buy those Zilla Clips in the near future.

To the OP: I use those same clips on one of my tanks and they work just fine. From what I'm hearing, you're saying that the screen doesn't fit flush on both sides of the tank. Are you sure it's the right size?

A 20 gallon lid for a 20 gallon tank...both bought from Petco...you would think it would be a perfect fit but I have about a half inch gap on the long side and about a quarter inch on the shorter side. For now I'm gonna use Textbooks and in the near future, I'll probably buy the Zilla clips, which look far more secure. Thanks for all the help guys.

Those are them!! Thanks Marica!

All my screen lids have gaps too. Some more than others...not all 20L tanks have exactly the same dimensions on the plastic upper edge, so that's probably why there is a discrepancy.

I have the same problem with the screen lid on my 10 gal. Its almost an inch too large on one side, and it's annoying. I have the Zilla clips- and I cannot figure out how to use them!!! I don't know if they will even work since the screen is so large. Right now I have the lid tightly secured with Masking Tape, and it works well, but I'm wondering if I should just buy a glass reptile cage from the pet store that have the locking screen built-in... they are just expensive :(

Simply slip the top of the clip (blue) into the top molding (frame) of the screen cover, then snap the clip’s bottom (purple) between the glass and the terrarium frame. Press down and pull out (green) to free the clip and open the lid. Zilla

I hope this helps explain how to use them. There should be enough give from the clips to accomodate a bit of a gap between the screen and tank. Your snakie will eventually outgrow the 10 gal and up until that time weighing down the screen as suggested should be sufficient so I wouldn't worry about going out and buying a new tank right now. Another possibility is to look for better fitting screen top as some stores sell them separately.

I have one tank that is slightly odd sized compared to the screen tops available. The screen top is about 2 inches longer than the tank, therefor any clip will not work on that end. Here's how I have solved the problem and have had no escapes to date.

I bought extra sets of clips and put 2 sets on each long end and 1 one the short end(small 5 gallon tank). One set of clips on the long side is 1/3 the way in from the clipped short end. The other set is right at the farthest end of the long side to the edge of the short end that can not clip. This has secured it so tightly that when I tug on the screen top it will not lift at all. There is no way my 9 gram baby can even squeeze it's self out of the paper sized gap, let alone a strong big snake later(not that a big snake will live in my 5 gallon). In fact those clips you have are the same ones I use and they fit so snug on there with all five on it, that I have to use a butter knife to pry them off to get at the snake.

The only thing I would watch for with them is they are easy to bend out of shape, so always check when you put them back on that they are still in the right shape and are all fitting tightly. I also have a second 10 gallon tank that has these clips and it also has more clips than recommended, 2 each long side and one each short side.

OOPS sorry I lied for the Screen top that does not fit right I use three clips on the long sides and one on the short side that can clip.
