Securing tank lid!

with my new baby corn i bought a starter kit which had basically everything i needed. the only problem i am finding is that due to it basically being a converted fish tank the lid is not lockable, and is made out of a pretty lightweight plastic. although the little fella cant lift this up quite yet im sure it wont be long till he makes his escape. what lids do you recomend and where from?!

any help would be appreciated!

:shrugs:

If it is a standard aquarium, they sell metal framed, screened lids that fit the top. You can get metal clips that secure it to the plastic trim on the tank.
I have about 6 setups like this with zero escapes. As a precaution you can use velcro strips between the trim and the lid. I find this to be quite adequate.

any idea where i can buy these from? all of the ones i have seen are size 12" x 20" whereas my tank is 10" x 18", before any1 shouts at me for the cage size, my corn is only 8 months old and this is only a temporary home for whilst he's growing!

your pet store should be able to order one for you. Tell them to check Hagen, as i know this company makes a good one.

I like the velcro idea. you can get stick on strips of velcro from your local fabric store, make sure that the lid and the edge of the viv are clean and dry, then apply the velcro strips.

I just measured my 10 gal lids and they are 10.5 x 20.5, so I don't know what you would do with a 12x 20? Where are you located?

When I used aquariums, I just used the metal framed lids with the wire screen. I either used bungee cords to hold them on, or heavy objects (neat rocks, textbooks, etc).

They sell 10 gallon lids like I described above everywhere around here. So I guess since you have an odd-ball sized tank, I'd just make sure there are no gaps for a snake to get out, and just weigh the lid down until it gets a new home.

If the lid you have isn't going to work out, a cheap 10 gallon aquarium can be found at Wal-mart for around $8-10, its just the glass aquarium, no fish supply contents. And you can find the lids at this place: http://www.herpsupplies.com/subcategory.cfm?id=5&sub=80

I buy most of my supplies there, good customer service and decent prices.

Hope that helps some. =)

you can also buy all sorts of velcro strips at your local harware store. i have velcro strips that attach the lid to the tank, ican send you a pic of my set-up if you'd like. but anyway i got the strips from canadian tire for like $3 and their super durable
