Securing Thermometer Probes

I have seen a lot of talk of taping probes to the glass in a tank but I am curious if anyone has found a better method the option I was thinking about was silcon calk (the same thing that seals the corners of a glass tank) I figure that might be an option that would be very secure yet still safe. Well give a holler if anyone has found a good solution to hold their probes in place.

I've used tape in the past with no problems. However, now I don't use anything to secure it. I put the prober on the glass and then run the wire across the bottom and then up the side of the tank. Once I cover the probe and wire with the aspen substrate, the weight of the aspen is plenty to hold it in place sufficiently. Haven't had any problems with this set-up yet.

The talk you heard about using tape inside a viv is completely wrong. NEVER use any tape inside a viv. Silicone will work ok, or suction cups, or other glue.

Tape is dangerous to your snake.

I am well aware it is not the way to go that is why I was looking for another more secure and safer method.

I've found the best thing to use in my viv is those little Velcro dots, if they come undone there is no danger to the snake at all and they work really well. I even use them to hold up branches and my thermometer. ;)

I think in general most people recommend avoiding anything that uses an active adhesive (One that stays sticky) because of the risk of a sticky patch being left there if velcro/tape/whatever else gets pulled up.

As I've stated before in other threads, there are tapes whose "stickyness" disappears after one use . . . ie. electricians tape, painters tape . . . and they can be used with relative safety.

There are other tapes that would be obvious risks like duct tape, packing tape, etc.

Be careful when using absolute statements.

I use super-glue to secure the probes. I take the snake out, take the aspen out, clean the area very well with water. Then put a dab of superglue on the probe and a dab on the tank. Then hold it down until its secured. Then I wait a half an hour before I put the aspen and the snake back in the tank. This works great for me.

Well I use Aqua seal which is an aquarium sealant to secure my probes and it's safe to use for reptiles. You just have to make sure it's cured fully before puting everything else in the tank.
Another advantage to using this is, it can be pretty easily removed i.e. if you have to change it to another tank or put a new one in if it stops working.

Hope that helps some,

I have been using window clings. We had a whole bunch from christmas, holloween, local sports teams ect. The ones Im using were from the local Zoo
I cut one into a 4"x4" square, Clean the bottom of the tank and put down the probe then simply squeegee the window cling onto the glass over the probe and voila. No adhesive and it will stay there until you pull it up at your next cleaning. Wash it if needed and its good as new

I use a dab of hot glue...easy to remove and can't be disturbed when my snake decides to burrow in the aspen!
