hiya,

I have a new crimson corn and i have noticed tha it has been three days since his eyes turned from blue back to black again and he still hasnt shed yet. is this normal??

I tyred giving him a bath in my sink with a little water and he seemed to like it but still hasnt started shedding, how long does it usually take ?

The other question is that i dont have a massive tank at the moment (he is only small) but i have it heated from below with a heat mat under the tank and aspen inside. however the tank floor doesnt seem very warm but my thermometer tells me its at 77/25. Is this temp ok for him and could this be why he hasnt shed yet?

All he has done since i got him is hide in his hide.

am i fretting about nothing and just thinking too much?

I would love to get a bigger tank for him to make it look like home but i cant afford it just now as he cost me £75 UKP alone.

£75?? Ouch. Actually, My normal phase cost me £55. The warm side should be around 85/30 degrees and the cool side around 75/25 degrees. I'm not sure if this plays a part in the shedding process. If it's been three days since your snake's eyes turned back to normal again, shedding should occur very soon.

looking at my current tank setup, how would you suggest increasing the heat i am using a heat mat but becuase of the type of lid i cant put a lamp in the tank to heat it up more.

that

tank is not very large anyways, you
ll need a new one for your snake in a few months. I can tell how big it is by that thermometer on the front. I have those for my fish as well.

When you get a larger tank you could get a lid and have a light. Until then maybe buy a better heating pad! Normally they get TOO hot, not, not hot enough.

ahhh

i am looking into getting a new tank soon anyways.

What size would you suggest? my local pet shop has a 2 foot one for £20 would that do and hows that for price?

As for the heat mat when i read the instructions for it it says that the heat mat will not get very hot it should only be warm to the touch as it uses a specific type of light to heat the snakes body rather than actual heat. Is that not how its ment to work?

You said i would need a new tank in a few months?? how quick will this little fellow grow?

i have had my garter for nearly a year now and he hasnt changed in size atall.

I know that corns get quite big, thats why i bought him (and the fact that he is a cutie) I was told that he would be happy in the tank he is in for a long time.....

anyways i want to change the tank and make it bigger for him to get more exercise and a larger heat greadeint

well

A "long" time could mean anything. The tank you have seems to be fine for a hatchling.

But they grow fast, I don't know about your garter but your cornsnake will DEFINITLY outgrow that tank within a year, if not faster.

You'll need to buy a three foot tank in a few months. Corns get bigger than garters and so obviously need a bigger viv. I'm not sure how big your current viv is but it looks as though is will do your snake until it is about two feet long. That won't take very long.

wow. didnt know they grow that fast, thats even better then i love big snakes but i thought it would take a few years for him to get big
