Shedding in my HAND!

wonton

Marzipan's Mom
I took Marzipan (Snow baby) out for his/her usual evening handling when s/he started behaving very oddly! S/he kept pushing his/her nose really hard against my hand and fingers, then sort of huffing before doing it again. I was beginning to get worried when the skin of his/her head began to peel back! Marzipan was using me to start his/her shed!

I was thinking, "wouldn't it be neat if Marzi shed completely in my hands?" when s/he let out a huge load of pooh on my leg. AWESOME. So s/he's in his/her viv now taking care of his/her shed as we speak. (I wouldn't have actually let Marzi shed in my hands. I don't know if that's okay? I was about to put him/her back in his/her viv anyway.)

Silly little snake. =D I had no idea s/he was due for a shed. I've bearly had him/her 3 weeks and I didn't notice any cloudy eyes or anything so this was a complete surprise!

The shed isn't going to be complete as the head piece fell off in the crook of one of my fingers, but the rest looks like it's going to be whole. I'm going to measure it to get a closer guess as to how long Marzipn is. I'll also take some post pictures. S/he's really BRIGHT!

This is so exciting!

Wow, that sounds like an interesting experience! The first time my snow was ready to shed I almost missed it. It can be a bit tougher to see when her eyes are cloudy, but now I can easily see it. I also notice that she usually stops coming out at night a couple of days before she goes into blue, which I'm sure if somewhat different from snake to snake.
One last thing, if you want to get a much closer idea of how long he/she really is check out Serpwidgets' snake measurer. It will give a much closer measurement than a shed skin. :)

That's fun

The first couple of times I saw them shed were years after I had my first snake. Since then I've "helped" snakes shed many times. I'm sure they wish I wasn't so eager to lend a hand. Its amazing the difference in color from the pre-shed snake to the freshly shed animal 10 minutes later. And yeah, usually they dump a nice-sized load while or after the shed.
With baby snows, it's particularly difficult to tell they are blue. Many times with young white snakes I have been surprised at a sudden shed. You'll get the knack of noticing the signs before long.

Here's a shot pf the coloration differences in action

I have a baby snow as well and it is difficult to tell when they blue (for us beginners anyway). That sounds like an awesome experience. I watched Ivory shed for the first time the other day. I had her out of her viv and had no idea she was about to shed, when I put her back instead of heading straight for her hide she began rubbing her head against the glass and then BAM she shed. It was fun to watch and then to feel the shed skin while it was still moist. :)

i haven't had the pleasure of seeing a snake shed yet, but it's cool to watch my bearded dragons shed. they use their claws sometimes to get it off their face :)

My daughters love watching the snakes shed. They work so hard getting it started, and then right on out of it they come. And they always look so cool just after a shed. We all ooh and awe over the new colors :).

Whoa, that'd be so awesome! I've only seen my snake shed a couple of times in person (once I witnessed the whole thing), she always does it when I'm out usually, I remember the first time she shed, me and my gf went to lunch, came back and there was a perfect skin lying in the viv. :)

Legoless shed while playing on my shoulder once...you're right, it's an awesome experience! I've been lucky enough to catch him either in the act, or just finished several times.

My James Dean shed in my hand the other day, it was adorable. Really couldn't believe it was happening. I was holding him and he kept head butting my open palm and opening up wide, after a couple of times his head bit popped then he squirmed through my index and thumb a few times, pulling himself backwards now and again. It was an amazing experience and obscenely cute lol.
