Shedding

Wow,
Gumbi just got the last of his old shed off yesterday and is dull and blue eyed and ready to start again. He is about a year old and seems to be fairly happy in his new home.
Im wondering about the tuperware container full of moist sponge trick. do you put it on hot or cold side???????????

I'm not entirely sure what you meant here. Did it take him a LONG time to get the last shed completely off or is he shedding one skin right after another?

If it takes him a long time to get each shed off then he needs help. Raise the humidity a bit (not alot!) in the enclosure so he has an easier time next time, provide a water bowl big enough for him to soak in and if he is still having trouble, give him a bath or use the moist moss in a box, like you said.

If he is shedding one skin right after another then he probably has a skin problem (blister disease, mites, etc.). You need to get him checked by a vet right away.

I'm not an expert in shedding problems but this advice is based on what I've read here and on other forums previously.

More experienced people feel free to correct or add to my answer.

Hi Matty. I usually put the tupperware container in the middle, but toward the hot side. That way the contents stay warm and the humidity is as high as possible inside the box. My snakes usually only visit the hot end now and again, so if I put the box too near the heat mat I don't think they'd use it.

You could increase the overall humidity as Katie suggests, by moving his usual water bowl to the hot end. Remember to refill it often, as it will naturally dry up a lot faster than usual.

Cheers
Kel

Hey Matty,
It is ideal that your snake sheds in one long piece. If it is having trouble you need to provide it with a container with damp moss.( paper towel, whatever) I use an old margarine container with a small hole cut in the side closer to the top with damp moss. I like the look and feel of the moss.
You have to monitor your snake very well when it sheds. Check the discarded skin to make sure that the eye caps came off or your snake may go blind. You must also check to make sure that the skin all the way to the tip of the tail came off. If not as the snake grows the old skin will not stretch and it will cut off the circulation and the tip will fall off.
Please pay close attention to your snake at this time.
I hope this helps,
Jimmy C.

How long ago did the OLD shed take place? How long had parts of the old shed still been attached to your snake?

When I have some problems with my corns shedding I usually just put them in a bath and hold the corn firmly so that the old shed comes right off... but dont peel it off just let it rub off on your hands... but it sounds like to me that your corn has had his old shed for a while... if this is the case try not to let this happen again... old sheds that are left unattended can cause your snake some serious damage... make sure that your corn fully sheds each time...
