Should heat mats be on the side of the cage?

I heard that any snake (as i have a corn and Japanese rat) prefers having its heat mat at the side of the cage (or back). Firstly- is this right? and also if this is right then how could i do it on a wooden, glass sliding door viv (the Jap rat has a glass one)?

I have never heard of a heating pad on the side of the cage.in my tanks i use outside the cage underneath
 
If you use an undertank heater, it is better to use it on one side of the tank or the other, rather than underneath the entire tank. This is so the snake has a temperature gradient. It can go back and forth from the warmer area to the cooler area depending on how it feels. Front-back temperature gradients are also fine; the important thing is just to have the temperature gradient.
 
I do have a gradient, it the hot area is about 3/5 of the cage and i know i have the righ temp. is 3/5 too much or should it be half?
 
The heat pad needs to be underneath so that they can rest their bellies on it to help with digestion. In the wild, they would bask on rocks that have gained heat from the sun.

What are your temps on each side?
 
hi i have a wooden viv with glass sliding doors and my heat mat is on the back of the viv i used heavy duty tape to fix it on.
 
I'll be getting a wooden viv in July/August for my snake and I was told the pad just go's on the bottom of the tank inside. I alway's have the pad halfway, shouldn't be more than this.
 
Hello all, new here. I currently keep pythons and was looking to get into keeping corns. Much more colorful and manageable in size.
Anyway, I heat my neodeshas with the heat tape covering one half of the back. This gives a nice warm spot on the side of the cage where the snake can bask without effecting the cool side. I have never had a problem with a regurge. Hope this helped.
