Small Children and Tanks

Hey there...

So I just found out that I'm expecting (very exciting) and now my brain is in overdrive about all the things I need to do/change, etc. I once heard this horrible story from someone about a pet tarantula. Their small child had gotten into the tank and had the spider climb up on a stick. He then went to show his mother in the shower, and well, as you can imagine it didn't go so well. She smacked the stick out of surprise and the little spider smashed on the wall and was forever lost. I was buying the tank from these guys and they said that they had clips on the lid and the child still got into the tank!

How do you keep kids out of a tank that has a lid w/ clips on it? I would think they would be too strong for a lot of kids, but I guess at a certain age it's not a problem anymore. Is there some fancy homemade contraption to lock a set-up like this?

One of my tanks has the sliding top w/ a space for a lock, but all the others are just clipped on. :uhoh:

Sounds like the tank was too close to the ground, and the mom didn't know what she was doing with her child.

Depending on how small the kid is, could the tank just be placed out of their reach? My 8 year-old sister's tank is on top of her dresser, which is really tall. I actually have to use a stool to get the snake out of it, and I'm not short.

Some of the tanks also feature a place for a lock - I haven't had to use one, but it could be worth looking into.

yeah my boa tank has locks that require a key to get into. and the putting it up high option works for years. if all else fails put all your animals in one room and put a lock on the door to the room. i wouldnt be that worried about it for quite awhile though. you havent even had the baby yet :p an infant sure isnt going to be getting into anything. all they do is sleep cry eat and poop. i wouldnt start worrying til the kid can at least walk.

There are tanks that come with places you can put locks on them. But most of the tank if you kept the viv up away from a childs reach there shouldnt be a problem, provided adult supervision is used!

this isn't necessarily about the security of the tank but more to do with your pregnancy. My daughter is two months old and these are a few precautions me OBGYN told me. Don't clean the tank yourself, bacteria can grow in the fecal matter that you and the baby can be susceptible to during pregnancy. ALWAYS! disinfect your hands! i am not much of a stickler on this in general, but while pregnant and during the first year this is absolutely vital. most snakes carry a form a salmonella, while not usually dangerous, it can be if the baby happens to catch it. just use the hand sanitizer or good soap and you should be fine. it's nothing to worry about, just a heads up. (btw, my ob is one of the top rated ones in central MN, and has been doing this for 30 years and so has his wife...he knows what he is talking about) congrats on the wee one! they are always worth it! enjoy as much of the pregnancy as you can! i had a very hard pregnancy and there are still things i found to enjoy. a few faves: people in stores are very courteous and helpful. it doesn't matter if the clothes don't fit perfectly, your pregnant and therefore gorgeous no matter what! have fun with your prego body!

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I know that there are lots of tanks that have a lid that does lock. I was looking for solutions for those of us using clips and a lid (obviously not locking). So just putting a lock on it does not work in anyway here unfortunately.

I know I won't have to worry about it for awhile :) Was just curious. Putting them up high seems like a good option for a time.
