Snake in the Box...

PikaBun

Ex-pet shop girl
Hi - I just saw my first bred female <blood red het. stripe> laying eggs last night. I counted around 15 white eggs when I peeked :D How long should I leave her in the laybox? She hasn't shown any interest in coming out and it must be close to 24 hours in there now (and the box isn't as big as I wanted so it's a bit cramped). Will she stay in there for multiple days?

You can reach in and remove the eggs. she may continue to rest in the lay box for a day or two and that is okay. She may "push" you a bit as you remove them, but you need to get those eggs set up for incubation. Be sure and offer mom a smaller than usual meal, also. She will soon go into her post lay shed. If she is in great shape and if you wish to double clutch her, introduce her to a male again in about 3 weeks. Again only do so if she is in top notch shape, otherwise let her rest up for next year.
Good luck with your clutch!

Hehe thanks! I tried to gently remove her. She was having none of it. She kept hissing and if I tried to lift her neck she dropped till her face was in the dirt again. I offered water and she tried to hiss at it instead of drink (that sounded bubbly). If I tried to touch the eggs she hissed and threw a coil at me...I did check the eggs and they are not dimpled. I did feel her whole length to tail tip when I tried lifting her. So skinny! No more eggs inside.

Another try later... So, she didn't even hiss this time so I looped her out over one hand and took the eggs. One giant mass of 18 white eggs! So exciting! The bottom eggs looked a little flat but they were being pressed to the bottom of the lay box. Should regain their shape in the incubator right? I am using Super Hatch, the clay-like stuff at just damp enough to see fine tiny beads of mist on the sides and saran wrap cover. I sprinkled some sphagnum from the lay box over top of the eggs too. Incubator is sitting at 81-82F.
