Snake laying slugs- I'm leaving town Tuesday

thelyonsking

honest, I'll only get 1
So my 6.5 year old cornsnake Tigger confirmed this morning what I already was pretty sure of- he is a SHE. She is laying eggs. Being as she has never been with another snake, I know these are slugs. So far she has laid 15 and I think there are more coming. How many should I expect and how do I know when she is done?

This is the first time this has happened, so I was a bit shocked when I first saw them this morning. I was planning to clean her cage and feed her this weekend before we left for a week vacation Tuesday. Is this something I should wait on now so as to not stress her out? Is there anything special I need to do for her? My mom is house sitting but generally doesn't do anything with the snake.

Thanks guys!

I've attached some pics for funzies!

Have you had her 6 1/2 years?? And this hasn't happen before.

I would see if I could feel any more slugs in her. I would think you could.
And if you do and she doesn't ""lay" it before you go. Get in touch with a vet before hand.
But i don't really think you have a problem. I just wouldn't feed the snake till you got back. Just leave it a good amount of water in the viv.

Yes, I got her as a wee little one in Dec 04 and she has always been alone. Absolutely never done anything like this before. She has always been more active this time of year. I was scared to death when I saw the first couple eggs because I thought something was wrong. Now there are about 18 and I suspect at least 3 more.

I'll take the eggs out tomorrow and be sure she has plenty of water before we leave.

Will this become a regular occurrence?

Generally they will lay them all in one day if left alone to do the job. Most of my corns lay eggs in about 8-12 hours although these are fertile eggs. Slugs are generally easier to pass than fertile eggs as they are smaller, wetter and tend to be very narrow. I would leave her alone and let her finish laying (this will probably be done today or tonight). Check on her tomorrow morning and if she appears done, clean the eggs out, clean the cage and offer her food. I'd feed her something smaller than normal and then leave her alone. She'll most likely shed in another week or so. Don't worry if she doesn't eat. She can wait until you get back. Hydration is more important than feeding and generally slugs do not steal as much calcium from them as fertile eggs. I'm sure she'll be fine.

Thanks!!! I got the eggs out today and will probably clean this evening. She really hasn't moved from the same spot other than to look at what i was doing. She definitely is ready to shed. Appreciate the guidance!

I have a friend who's corn lays a couple of clutches every year of slugs. So it may be something to watch for in the future.

So glad it all worked out! She's lovely!
