I'm female. For those who wish the whole boring story of how I got into snakes, read on.
When I was a child our house was always "The Zoo"... we had a parrot, parakeets, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, rats, bunny rabbits, tortoises, dogs, cats, hermit crabs, lizards, fish, and "The Snake". My memory isn't strong enough to remember if he had a name. I'm still not sure what kind of snake he was, though I'm pretty sure he was a gopher or a pine snake. He was about 5 or 5 feet long. My brother brought him home one day. I can remember the conditions the poor thing lived in. He was in an octagonal fish tank, with a flourescent bulb (no heater, no hide). We fed him one adult mouse every month. (always an occasion). When my brother died I don't really remember what became of "The Snake", but I always had fond memories of him.
FAST FORWARD from 15 years old to 31 years old.
I was living and working in Georgia at a boarding school. I had just recently become engaged and was one night walking down the hill from the school grounds to the teacher housing. Cruising along the driveway in the gutter was this small snake, probably no more than 18 to 24 inches long. It was twilight so color and details were missing. But I calmly walked about a quarter of a mile with the snake slithering next to me. He could have been venemous, he could have been a cornsnake! I didn't get a good enough look. When I got down to the apartments I went over to my fiance's apartment to tell him about my adventure. (Of course I had a long conversation with the snake, and admired him from a small distance). From this point my prior liking of snakes began to take root. I suggested, partly in jest, that we would get a snake as a pet once we were married. My fiance was quick to veto that notion, and I was just as quick to drop the issue.
FAST FORWARD 6 months.
Married in June, Hubby and I moved from Georgia out to Arizona. We both taught at the same rural public high school. One day, in slithers a tiny little snake into my classroom, barely 4 inches long. "Can we keep him" I had to ask. So we kept the little bugger and I learned all I could about him. He ate crickets with gusto. In order to learn about the snake, I had to go online and do research. I ended up on KS.com and got to reading the various threads I could find there. The more I read, the more I learned about my little ground snake, and the more I wanted a "Real" snake. Pretty soon I was working on hubby, and when we had a local reptile show, away we went. November, just before my birthday. We came home with a lovely Rosy Boa. Beautiful! Then I came into some money by selling some junk I had, and we made arrangements to buy some kingsnakes. Now, barely 3 years later, I have 2.6 California Kingsnakes, 5.6 cornsnakes, 3.7 other kingsnakes, 1.1 hybrids, and 3 ball pythons.
My stepdaughter wanted (and got) a snake for her birthday present. I'm guessing that her little brother will end up wanting a snake of his own, even if he can't bring it home with him (she lives with us, he lives with his mother).
Funny thing is... snakes don't really like me... I get bit frequently... but snakes love my hubby, he's a snake charmer, they calm down and act like pussycats with him. Go figure. But hey, what's a little bit of blood?
