My wife hates snakes and just barely tolerates my little guy. I used to think this was a "girl thing" (no offense intended) but I see a lot of the posters here are female, so I got to wondering...

What percentage of us snake owners are male and female?

my wife AND i are both female...& we both adore our snake & can't wait 2 get more!....& in my experience...we have several female friends who have or want snakes....& several male friends who are terrified of them...won't be in the same room as the snake & can barely tolerate being in the same house!..(btw, the terrified males are straight, not gay...so there goes the theory that straight boys are SOOO tough!) :p :grin01:

Believe it or not, my husband AND my two sons are TERRIFIED of snakes!! LOL I am the only one in the family with this addiction and I am a female!

Cornsnake are very popular with female. All the cornsnake owner I know in ''real life'' are female, and most male I know prefer biggest and meanest snakes like boa constrictor or burmese python!! ;) but... there is exceptions! ;) And, most people I know that fear snakes are males, but the only reason why people fear snakes, it's beacause they are not well informed. For exemple, all the member of my family were very afraid of snakes... and when i told them i was going to get one.... they told me i was crazy. And now they are handeling them often and they want to get one!! :eek1:

But... i think snakes are getting more popular... reptiles in general are getting more popular!! ;)

I know on my "usual" forum that it is pretty much 50/50 male/female with varying age groups from young teens to people in their 60/70, have a look for more details on the following link (my homepage). I see you on their sometime people.

Like she said, there are exceptions. One of my close male friends only wants to have calm docile snakes, so he's sticking with corns. I on the other hand would love to move up to some of the "nastier" species, like Gonyosoma oxycephala, Spilotes pullatus, Beauties, and Radiated ratsnakes. I love my corns, but I must say if not for the endless amount of morphs, I think I'd get tired of them because they are so docile and so small.

I'm female. For those who wish the whole boring story of how I got into snakes, read on. :)

When I was a child our house was always "The Zoo"... we had a parrot, parakeets, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, rats, bunny rabbits, tortoises, dogs, cats, hermit crabs, lizards, fish, and "The Snake". My memory isn't strong enough to remember if he had a name. I'm still not sure what kind of snake he was, though I'm pretty sure he was a gopher or a pine snake. He was about 5 or 5 feet long. My brother brought him home one day. I can remember the conditions the poor thing lived in. He was in an octagonal fish tank, with a flourescent bulb (no heater, no hide). We fed him one adult mouse every month. (always an occasion). When my brother died I don't really remember what became of "The Snake", but I always had fond memories of him.

FAST FORWARD from 15 years old to 31 years old.

I was living and working in Georgia at a boarding school. I had just recently become engaged and was one night walking down the hill from the school grounds to the teacher housing. Cruising along the driveway in the gutter was this small snake, probably no more than 18 to 24 inches long. It was twilight so color and details were missing. But I calmly walked about a quarter of a mile with the snake slithering next to me. He could have been venemous, he could have been a cornsnake! I didn't get a good enough look. When I got down to the apartments I went over to my fiance's apartment to tell him about my adventure. (Of course I had a long conversation with the snake, and admired him from a small distance). From this point my prior liking of snakes began to take root. I suggested, partly in jest, that we would get a snake as a pet once we were married. My fiance was quick to veto that notion, and I was just as quick to drop the issue.

FAST FORWARD 6 months.

Married in June, Hubby and I moved from Georgia out to Arizona. We both taught at the same rural public high school. One day, in slithers a tiny little snake into my classroom, barely 4 inches long. "Can we keep him" I had to ask. So we kept the little bugger and I learned all I could about him. He ate crickets with gusto. In order to learn about the snake, I had to go online and do research. I ended up on KS.com and got to reading the various threads I could find there. The more I read, the more I learned about my little ground snake, and the more I wanted a "Real" snake. Pretty soon I was working on hubby, and when we had a local reptile show, away we went. November, just before my birthday. We came home with a lovely Rosy Boa. Beautiful! Then I came into some money by selling some junk I had, and we made arrangements to buy some kingsnakes. Now, barely 3 years later, I have 2.6 California Kingsnakes, 5.6 cornsnakes, 3.7 other kingsnakes, 1.1 hybrids, and 3 ball pythons.

My stepdaughter wanted (and got) a snake for her birthday present. I'm guessing that her little brother will end up wanting a snake of his own, even if he can't bring it home with him (she lives with us, he lives with his mother).

Funny thing is... snakes don't really like me... I get bit frequently... but snakes love my hubby, he's a snake charmer, they calm down and act like pussycats with him. Go figure. But hey, what's a little bit of blood?

Been divorced for a few years, but my Ex and both of our daughters love the snakes
And have always been supportive of my addiction

Great story Sasheena. Your house sounded like mine growing up, minus the snake. Mom never let me have one although they let us have lizards and everything else. I made myself a snake from fabric once. About an 8' floral patterned boa when I was maybe 10 years old. Both my parents love the snakes I have now, and hold them whenever they visit. Here's a picture of mom and dad with C.S.

I'm male and have loved snakes from a very young age. Once when I was younger, about 8 or 9, my aunt's friend had a 6' Boa Constrictor and I was deftly interested in it. I remember going to the pet store and getting two huge rats. I didn't know the snake was going to eat them. When wew went back to their house, my uncle and him got out the snake and put it on a round mirrored table. They put one of the ratsa on the table and the snake pounced. It lunged forward and bit a hole in the rat's side. It started bleeding and the snake wrapped around it and constricted the life out of it. I've been hooked ever since.

Okay, I did not get onto the poll in time, and am now posting this as an afterthought. As you probably figured by my name, I am a female. I have loved snakes all my life, was never scared of them, but I hate spiders and ants... go figure. When I was about 13, I found my first snake. A small garder snake that was hiding under a bridge close to my house, so I took it home. My mother would not let me keep it (unknown sex) in the house, so we made a make shift viv outside for it (without heat). The next day I went to my frineds with my little snake in a box and while playing, the snake got out. I am not going to go into details as to what happend that he got out, as there was a physical altercation with one of the other boys and myself.

But anyways, I joined the service and traveled a lot, so I got a kitten because they are loving and easier to move with. Then I got sent to Hawaii with my Ex-Husband and I wanted a snake, but due to Hawaii Laws, they are Illigal and I was not able to get one. So after the divorce and my move in with my boyfriend, his daughter had a male Bearded Dragon that she never took care of. I began taking care of Ozzie (the Bearded Dragon) but found that my work schedual was to crazy, and I was not really into the itchy spikeies all over his body. So I had to go get more mealworms for the BD at this wonderful place called "The Reptile Ranch" and started chatting with the owner and told her about my BD that I really did not have the time to care for, and that I really wanted a snake more. My boyfriend said it was okay for me to trade Ozzie in for something that I wanted more then him, and so the deal was made. I traded in a $150 Bearded Dragon in for a $20 cornsnake.

That is my story!
