snake tank questions...

hi everyone
i've set up my snake tank, but it seems to loose heat rather fast when i open the side sliding door thing..
the center of the tank reached a stable 27°c or 80.6°f after being left alone for a couple hours, but after moving the thermometer around a bit, the temp on the substrate (reptibark) is only around 24°c or 75°f, the glass under the substrate reached at least 33 or 34°c (92.3°f) :shrugs:

i cant get my tank to heat up fast enough, yet not be too hot, or is this normal?
maybe i should get a heater in the room near the tank. room temp is 19°c or 66.2°f

ok well i think my temps are stable now..
i bought one of those day/night timer things

still waiting to get pics from my friends camera :/

You definitely need a thermometer with a probe so you can check the heat at the source.

You have your heat on a timer? Does that mean your snake goes with out heat at night? :(

that was the plan at 1st, but last night i noticed the temp got a little cold, hehe

so i got the timer going mostly on, with some offs now and then
it seems to be working ok so far :)

I had a similar problem when I was using Reptibark. In order for proper temps on top of substrate the glass was around 100 F. I switched to aspen and all is well.

I think aspen allows the heat through to the top better. I dunno, just a guess.

I would switch to aspen (it's cheaper) & get a rheostat for you UTH. It is far better to control the heat than to turn it off :D

does anyone use astroturf, or anything similar? I'm thinking that's going to be a lot cheaper in the long run, but I don't want to get anything sub-standard.

I used astro turf for about the first week, then I went to aspen shavings. It was recomended to me becuase no matter how much you try and clean the astroturf, it would be a breading ground for germs and is really hard to clean. Plus snakes like to burrow in the aspen and hide. Eaiser to spot clean for poo in aspen, just scoop it out instead of having to take everything out, remove the turf and then ttry to clean it.

Okay, I was planning on getting 2 pieces, and when one had to be washed, I'd set the second piece in... but maybe I'll go with aspen
