The Maddest Hatter
I am taking this from:Southtexasreptiles.com because it never hurts to get the word out a little more. You never know how far this animal could get for the right price. And to remind everyone to watch their reptiles closely if you sell at shows, bad people are everywhere.
Dangerous Animal Stolen
A venomous banded Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum cinctum) was stolen from the Live Oak Civic Center in NW San Antonio on Sunday 3/7/2010. The 8 to 9 inch plus lizard is light orange with black bands and has a rough beaded texture to the skin. The animal was contained in large clear acrylic deli cup-type container that was sealed with distinctive red electrical tape and was appropriately labeled on the lid. The pattern of back banding is distinctive and can be matched to a photographic record archived by the owner. The individual who took the animal was described as a Hispanic male in his mid twenties with a shaved head numerous tattoos angled across his neck and some distinctive black lettering that was tattooed above his right eyebrow. The get a way vehicle is described as a red late model full-sized pickup that was missing a rear license plate. The suspect is wanted for questioning by the Live Oak Police Department. Being a threatened animal species, Gila monsters are a CITES Appendix II listed species and ownership requires documentation of legal acquisition which these individuals would not have.
While seemingly slow and gently, Gila monsters are powerful lizards with very strong jaws that can snap quickly to the sides or upward, latch on with bull dog like grip and inflict a painful venomous bite. Although uncommon, human fatalities have been reported and there is no effective anti-toxin available for the treatment of its bite. Because of this, this animal should only be handled with appropriate equipment and personal protective equipment by specifically trained and experienced personnel. Please contact the Region 8 Zoonoses Control Veterinarian (Dr. Edward Wozniak at (830) 279-5463 if you encounter this animal.
