my snake diablo is almost 3 months old, and he recently found a new hidding spot under his water dish. i was worried though becuase he was hiding under there for a bout 3 days without even poking out his head at nighttime(i was wondering if this was normal)..when he was always trying to find a way to escape before. Today was time for him to eat and he ate fine, but when i put him back in his cage he started scratching his head on one of his hiding rocks on the warm side and sorta banging it..his eyes aren't milky and it doesn't look like its time to shed yet..just wondering if any of this is normal <can't find any other faq about this>
 
It does sound like he's starting a shed.

As he's been hiding for a few days, you might have missed the milky phase. Before they shed, they go back to their normal colour for a while, so he won't necessarily be milky when the shed starts.

Give him 48 hours and see what happens.
 
I've had my butter corn (unconfirmed) just over a week now, this is my first post since my intro and i've yet to post pics. The last few days he has been hiding under his water dish which is on the cool side and wet/damp underneath. He is about 4 months old, roughly 16 inches maybe slightly bigger and I fed him 2 pinkies on Tuesday for the first time and he ate them fine once I left him alone.

I haven't seen any milky/blue phase and I make sure to check and change his water every night.

Any other reason he's doing this? Too hot maybe? I only have two stick on thermometers at the moment at either side of the viv, and I have the thermostat set to 80f with the sensor on the pad and the pad underneath the glass viv which is slightly raised on small feet.

He had been in his warm hide a few times till I raised the pad to 84 the other day thinking it wasn't warm enough...so dropped it back down to 80 and after he fed he went in there for awhile, but since hasn't...and now just always under the water dish.

Any idea's from the experts? :shrugs:

well im no expert, just a corn lover. either way, it is possible that he likes the tight space, and feels more secure under there, seeing as he just moved in a week ago.

my okeetee, Jake, is the same way, exept he hung out in a really small coconut beside his water. Just to check,I moved the coconut to the warm side and sure enough, he moved with it.

So i wouldn't be too concerned about it.

P.S. for future reference, you probably should have started a new thread for that post
 
Lighter colored animals like your butter will be harder to see in blue. Snows and amels are difficult too..especially when they are small. My adult male Okeetee likes to stuff his big body under his water bowl too and will lay there with the thing partially perched on his back. I still think shed.....
