Tank upgrade?

DogStar5988

Up all night
Hello everyone!

Haven't been on this forum in years but I've been thinking of upgrading my corn snake's tank and thought I'd get some opinions. He's almost 10 years old now and has been in a 20L. I was thinking of something with more vertical space for some climbing action (knowing floor space is most important). I don't want to make the jump to just a larger aquarium and was thinking of maybe one of the Zoomed-ish reptile habitats. Does anyone have experience with any good options? Here is a picture him (Dante).

Dante is very handsome! Welcome back :wavey:

There are many options. If you want to go the glass enclosure route I suggest the ExoTerra with the front glass doors. I think it's 40-50 gallons. The floor is 36x18 and it is 18 inches tall. I have my adult corn snake in one and it's working well for me. I have aspen substrate and thermostatically controlled undertank heating.

I have had no problem with a 4' vivarium for my adult male. It's 18" deep and 18" high, and he does do a little climbing using the heavy branch/log I've got in there. He uses every inch of it and would probably appreciate even more space, but a 3' viv would work equally well. I'm afraid I can't advise regarding aquariums or glass enclosures as I've only ever used wooden vivs/terraria for adult snakes.

Giga, you have wooden vivs in the UK that we can't buy here. Our choices seem to be glass, or plastic (usually PVC). If we want wood we need to build them ourselves.

It would appear that manufacturing wooden vivs might be cheaper in the UK. Beeger Boxes (now called Dragon Racks) did make a very nice large snake viv for about $250-270, while I found an equivalent-sized wooden viv available in the UK for about $150, which was then on sale for less than $100.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Maybe I'll make a project out of it and make something myself. Might be fun. The larger habitats I was thinking of are pretty pricey.

I honestly had no idea vivs were a hassle elsewhere in the world - over here they are the standard thing that most people have; having an aquarium or otherwise glass enclosure for a snake would be quite unusual... Honestly it's a bit hard for me to wrap my head around; if I want to get a viv I just pop down the reptile shop and pick up a 2', 3' or 4' one.

Funny how these little things are different :3

Anyway, I thoroughly endorse going all DIY on it; why not? I have seem some beautiful homemade enclosures made out of old cabinets and other furniture and they always look great. Unfortunately I have the DIY skills of a potato so... :p

Be aware that if you build your own, heat mats cannot be safely placed beneath a wooden surface without a ventilated gap to prevent thermal blocking and overheating, since wood is a poor conductor of heat. Many are designed with a glass bottom, especially with an opening between it and a wooden floor beneath it for the heat mat to rest on.

Right. I was thinking of going with the heating pad on a ceramic tile with some spacers under it. I think I've heard of people using that method. I'll have to look at some articles and see what it possible. If it looks like the materials are going to cost as much or more than an actual viv I'll just buy it probably.
