Temp Suggestions

So I am getting a corn snake soon and I have the viv already set up. I was trying to make a gradient in the tank but I think if I do it might be too hot. Here's what I'm dealing with. I have a thermostat that turns on two degrees below what its set at so I first set it for 85 and it comes on at 83 but even after it turns off at 85 it keeps heating till 87.8 before starting to come down again. So I said to myself I'll just turn it down to 84 and it will go to probably a little over 86 and start to come down, but since we keep our house at 80 during the summer, the themostat hardly ever comes down enough to kick on, hanging out at just 82.3. So my question is should I just leave the thermostat at 84 and keep the whole viv around 82 most of the time or should I set it at 85 and have a gradient but also temps as high as 87.8?

I would just leave it there. Here is AZ we have a similar problem so during the summer I don't use any heat at all.

It all depends where and how you're measuring the temperature. Where have you positioned the thermometer and what type is it?

Setup sounds good then. I usually aim for an actual temp on the floor of 85-88, so in your place I'd go with the slightly higher setting.
