Temperature?

Well i just recently got a baby albino corn and i just need some help on my temperature. I have a UTH and a heat lamp but the temperature stays between 50 - 60 degrees so i turned on my heater so it stays around 80 - 85 degrees. Its been working good but it cost alot monthly and its affecting my guinea pig and baby large mouth bass and they have been doing poorly lately. So im just wondering if theres a way to keep my snake at a substantial temp without causing problems for my other animals?

Why would the snake heat affect the other animals? Could you describe the setup and maybe give us a picture. Most corns are fine with just a UTH as long as the hot spot is at optimal and the rest of tank isn't below optimum

The heater i heat my snake tank heats my whole room so it gets pretty hot. My bass is a cold water fish and my guinea pig is pretty much used to the colder weather up here. I also have a digital thermostat in my snakes viv. i can try to get pictures later?

Well if you heat the room, you can only have it warmer or cooler. All animals will have the same temperature - there's no magic fix for that one.

However, a UTH without a thermostat should keep the tank's floor temperature far too hot for the Corn, so the fact that you have a UTH, a lamp and a room heater on, probably means that the actual temperature in the tank is way above what you think. I'd hazard a guess that your thermometer is on the blink. What type of thermometer are you using and where is it in the tank?

Oh well its a digital thermometer and its located right above the substrate.

Heres my tank.

This is the thermometer.

A cord runs down into the tank.

It is not necessary for the tanks air temperature to be 80-85F, just the floor, as corns need belly heat. Make sure you provide a Hide above the UTH. You should easily be able to get the vivarium floor to that temperature. Remember, the UTH will only heat where it is placed. Place your thermometer/thermostat probe directly above the UTH. It is possible to control the heat with adjusting the height of your substrate, but easier with a thermostat. Neither is incorrect when using a heat pad, as they don't often get to too hot.

How many times can I use "UTH" in one post :)

Yup, what braingarble said. Place the probe above the UTH on the glass (under the aspen). I'm sure you'll realize the temp, if anything, is too hot.
Everything else is good, looks like your cave is above the UTH and the corn in on the cool side which is why I'm guessing temps could possibly be too warm.
A thermostat will set your UTH to maintain an ideal, set temp (84-86)

The thermostat is about $30 but it will fix all your temp problems and will save you a few bucks from over-heating your room :)

I'm afraid most makes/models of UTH will hit 120+ if not used with a thermostat (there's one which doesn't, but that doesn't get warm enough for Corns anyway). Several people on here have done tests, as it's a question that recurs. It really is a vital bit of kit for Corns, which risk neurological damage if exposed to temps which are too high.

The probe needs to be placed on the floor surface immediately on top of the UTH's position.

What everybody else said, though I caution against using substrate thickness as a temperature control because corns will burrow.

Also, some old research articles I found show that ectotherms exposed to 120F temps without a means of escape can lead to the worst kind of neurological damange: death.

I'm using the Exo Terra Heat Wave RAINFOREST (Large) uth in my 90gal glass tank, which keeps temps 84-89 consistently without the use of the thermostat. I've had it going for 8weeks now without a problem of temps going below 84 or above 90. I needed my thermostat for the Desert UTH, which temps reached 120.
Not saying you don't need the thermostat by any means, but I think the Rainforest UTH is more 'suitable' for corns vs. the high heat of the desert version or other heat mats that are commonly sold through petstore chains (petsmart). Again, only my experience with ONE snake. I have my thermostat and another UTH in case this one fails to hold proper temps. Had I come to this site prior to getting my snake, I would have definitely done things differently. I would have ordered my heatmat, thermostat, etc. online through trusted advise.
