The substrate hider

my snake is about 2 months old and one month in my posession

But he keeps hiding in the fir substrate (which is snake approved) and its annoying because hes just a little snake and he does a damn good job of not being seen.

I have a ten gallon tank that is kept at 78 and 82 degrees on the ends with a fake branch and a skull for hiding.

Keep in mind I don't have much money to get stuff but I read in an earlier thread about the owners cloths being put inside the terrarium, will that help him emerge... will anything?

I have a cat that pats at the glass every once in a while when hes not messing with my ciclids across the room. Maybe its him...

It could be the cat scaring the lil guy.

But corn snakes are mostly nocturnal. They hide and sleep all day and become active at night. So it is very normal for him to bury himself in the substrate.

Try looking for him right after the sun goes down.

Yes he does come out more at night but I just wish I could get him an alternative to substrate that snakes can't resist.

As the snake gets bigger and more confident, it may hide less. It's normal behaviour for them to burrow and hide though, if it wasn't able to your snake would probably be quite stressed

what are the best ways to tell if a snake is stressed during handling and observing in the tank? I know the tail shakes sometimes but he's only done that once the first day I had him.
