I don't know if this is chain-wide or just my local store, but I just picked up 2 Zoo-Med 500R thermostats for $4.98 each.

I also got a small "Kritterz" brand heat mat (5"x5") for $3.00.

I don't even really need any of it but at that price I couldn't pass them up. If there had been any more thermostats I probably would have nabbed them as well. Can't hurt to have back-ups.

When I found the first thermostat in the bin, unpackaged but still unused and in mint condition, I had to ask them to look up the price as nothing in the bin was marked. Expecting to be disappointed with maybe a 10 or 20% markdown, I was pleasantly surprised when the guy finally came back and told me 4.98. Found another one still in full packaging and got that one for the same price.

FWIW, regular price on the thermostat was $40 and apparently they don't even carry any kind of thermostat any more. A bit disconcerting since the heat mats sold there will ALL get far too hot for any of the herps they sell without a thermostat or rheostat controlling them.
 
Holy crap, I knew the kritterz brand UTH's were on clearance but I didn't know about the thermostats! Thanks for the heads up!
 
Be sure to have them scan the UPC to check the proper price, as the t-stats had no price but the heat mat was marked like $11 but it rang up at $3.

I think they may have a bit of leeway in pricing the clearance bin junk, as the packaged 500R rang up at $9 but the clerk changed it to the same $4.98 price as the loose one.

Looks like time to construct my home-built incubator for the upcoming season, and much cheaper than I had expected =)
 
Interesting, although at those prices it's still a great clearance price regarldess.
And yeah that does bug me that they're not carrying thermostats anymore, when I used to tell people about them when I worked there I gave them websites to order them off of because I didn't feel right selling them a $40 thermostat.
 
Funny, the only time I buy anything from Petco is if it's on clearance. Their regular prices on EVERYTHING are ridiculously high.
 
Well I got a discount because, you know working there. I still get the discount when I go in too because they all still like me.
 
All the petcos I've been to don't even carry thermostats..but I'll check it out..I am in dire need of a thermostat for a milk snake I was supposed to get a LONNNGG time ago..I just didn't want to have it sent to me until I have everything..but when I lost my job it really hit me hard and I wasn't able to get the things I need..all that's left that I need is a tank, thermostat, and thermometer and I have everything..any way..I'm gonna check that out today if I get the chance...thanks
 
It can't hurt to check. I might check some of the other area Petco's myself to see if I have similar luck.
 
The manager can pretty much do whatever he/she wants for clearance stuff. Sometimes crap like barbie dog clothes stays around so long they just zero it out and toss it in the dumpster.

I'll check tomorrow to see if my petco has any. I do recall for a while there was only one sitting there. I know it was the same one because the package was pretty torn up, heh.
 
I didn't see them on the shelf at work today. Didn't notice them in the pile of clearance halloween and christmas junk either.
