yesterday i bought my first thermostat and am a bit confused because in the manual it says place the sensor 9 inches away from the bottom of the tank but i have read other threads on here that say place it directly on the bottom of the tank.also what night and day temperatures should i be aiming for.

Are you using a heat mat? If you are, the best place to put the sensor/probe is just underneath the mat, that way it can accurately regulate the temperature on the mat, I cant understand why you would put it 9 inches away as it wouldnt be accurate. Ideally you should also get a thermometer with a probe, that will sit inside the tank, with the probe under the substrate (but above the heat mat). Good luck and welcome

CornNoobie has already answered this one but I just wanted to back it up saying he's correct :)

Everytime you post I think it's me >_>

If the mat is under the tank/container... I would put the probe for the thermostat and the thermometer inside the tank side by side under the substrate. You want to control the temp where the snake is actually going to be.

...but if you put the thermostat probe inside the viv, make sure to secure it down with glue or a suction cup or silicone. No tape.

If the thermostat probe gets moved off the UTH the temps will get too high. I prefer mounting it with foil tape outside the viv, right on the heat mat, with the thermometer probe inside under the substrate to get the proper temperature reading. I do the same with my rack, the thermostat probe goes right on the heat rope.
