thermostats?

i was just wondering what anyone could tell me about these thermostats for regulating the temp of the tank.what kind of heating devices do you use them with, etc.are thermostats necessary, etc.

You have to use a thermostate with a heat bulb. You dont have to use on with a heatmat, but you can if you want.

Well I use a product called thermo timer. That thing allows three different temperature-time settings, e.g. night and day. I use it with a heat cable. works very good and is not that pricy. €40 means about 50$. Well worth its money.

You will need a thermostat with a heat mat depending on the type of heat mat you have. Some heat mats can go right up to 50oC (which you don't want!) and drop to 16oC. I have one heat mat that self regulates...it never goes above 31 degrees but can fall quite low (20s) if the ambiant temp is low. Basically it is best to get a thermostat if you're unsure and want peace of mind. You'll also def need and thermometer to keep tank temps in check.

agreed with rachel

I would recomend a thermostat with a heatmat as well. I have a UTH that went right up to 120 F without the thermostat! Now I use thermostats for all heat sources and both me and my snakes are happier. Plus I have the indoor/outdoor type thermometers to ensure that the thermostats are doing their job! :p

Moonshadow, my heat matt is up to 110 degrees on the surface of the glass now. WAY too hot. Can you tell me what type of thermostat you use, where you got it, and how it works (i.e. do you plug the matt into the thermostat? will it work with an extension cord?).
Thanks!

Sandra, I use ESU reptile thermostats. you plug the UTH into the thermostat and then you plug the thermostat into the wall (or whatever). I'm guessing you could use an extension cord to plug the thermostat into the wall but I've never done that. It has a probe that you place on the surface of the glass above the heat mat and the thermostat should keep the temps around where you set them. Of course they may not be all that accurate which is why you should have another thermometer to check its accuracy. Anyhow, I've heard that some people have had problems with the ESU thermostats, but they've worked for me so far. If you really want top of the line you should go for a helix. they're pricey though. hope i helped! :D

I received and installed my Big Apple Herp brand thermostat today. The glass temp over the UTH has gone from outrageously high temps to a nice, steady 85 degrees. It was worth every penny!

I have 5 of the big apple 1000 series thermos in use and love them. I have them on glass aquariums and on animal plastics racks. They work perfect and are cheap.
