Transporting the Snake.. and a Pirate.

Hey, I'm new to the forums here but I just had a few quick questions. First, I have the viv all set up however I have this pirate.. he's plastic with copper plating and I was thinking about putting him in the tank just for aesthetic purposes. I was just wondering if this would be safe for my snake?

Secondly, I go to college where snakes are not technically allowed as pets... This is fine because no one checks the room until breaks.. I.e thanksgiving, winter, and spring. For this I plan to drive home with the snake in the tank and then set it up at home. However I was wondering if this will be safe for him? It can get pretty cold here (Ithaca, NY) and I don't want him to freeze w/o a heater. The trip is like three hours so it's not too bad, I just don't want to lose my new snake because I had to take him home! Thanks for any advice I can get in advance.

I'm not sure about the copper pirate thing :shrugs:

But the travel home should be alright. I'm guessing however you are traveling home will be heated. Your snake should be alright during that time. I would suggest not handling him for a couple of days once you get home.

Not sure how far your going, but i use heating packs (like for backs etc) as a temp heat source and just make sure the car is warm. I just take afew packs with me whenever im taking shinzon to the vets and once one cools down start of another and throw it in.

a friend of mine uses an adapter and just plugs his heating pad right into the cars outlet

Great, at least I don't have to worry about travel. As far as the pirate goes, I'm not sure what I'll do. I just don't want anything bad for it in there. I'm also thinking about getting a skull (like an aquarium decor) and a stick for him to climb on. All I've been able to find is a small stick thats like $12 but we'll see.

I wouldn't put any metal objects into the viv. Copper is bad about leaching out even with the slightest bit of moisture. If that moisture is mixed with the acidic junk in poop or urine, then it leaches faster. It may not be deadly, but it's definitely not a great idea. Kind of like tossing pennies in a koi pond.

Plastic, ceramic, wood, and resin aquarium decorations are fine though. See if you can find a pirate that was made for a fish tank. :)

I would definitely have a contingency plan if the administration somehow finds out about the snake. Even if they don't normally search until breaks, you could have a roommate or dormmate who is totally freaked out about having a snake in the building. S/he could rat you out. Try to have someone who doesn't live in the dorms be willing to come to the school, pick up the snake and viv, and take care of it until you're on break.

I would pretty much agree with the general opinions above. However if your car journey is only 3 hours, the snake should be fine especially if you turn the car heater on. Good luck with not getting my caught, my sister's landlord had to check her room once and found her snakes - but he was actually cool about it and said he'd turn a blind eye!

And make sure that whatever you put in the vivarium for decor, disinfect it first by soaking it in and very weak bleach solution for about 20 mins, then rince and dry well.

I just picked up a big curved piece of grapevine that has a portion that was hollow. Its about 10"-12" long and about 3" diameter for $6 at Petland here in Stow Ohio
they had a whole bin of sizes and shapes to choose from

I'd suggest a heat pack between the time you leave your room to the time your car's heater warms up the car, then your snake will be fine from there. Because if your leaving the room at 70F and you step out to walk to your car into under 40F weather, your snake might get too cold - especially if your car is far from your dorm room. Once your car's heated up, you can remove the heat pack until you arrive back home and step out of the car again.

And on the copper, I'm going with texastailfeathers answer :)

Whenever I transport a sinlge snake in a snake bag from house to car and its cold, I tuck it under my shirt for body heat. Looks like I'm pregnant, but oh, well.

Any aquarium decorations you might use, make sure they aren't hollow with an opening on the bottom. Small corn snakes just love to climb up inside such hollow openings, and can be very hard to get out. Assuming youy even know they are there. There have been people on this forum who thought they lost their snakes and freaked out only to eventually find them crawled up inside a hollow aquarium decoration.

Yea I'm going to look for some safe aquarium decor for the tank. As far as getting caught goes I have an off-campus friend who can house it if needed and I'm sure it will be fine if the car is warm enough. Thanks :)

Here is another thing to think about....transporting a snake in a glass tank is not a good idea...One drop, or even worse, a car wreck and not only could there be an escape, but also sever injury to the snake or to yourself. I put mine either in pillow cases and then in a carryon bag, or in plastic critter carriers or secured tubs. Of course you take the tank along so you won't be caught, but then if there is an accident you know your snake is protected. Plus, as was said above, make sure you have a contingency (spelling?) plan in case you get caught. I live near Penn
State University and the ads in the papers and petstores have plenty of herps and furry things that were taken to school as pets and one way or another have been found out and the owners were scrambling for finding a place for them. many things can happen other than inspection....door open and someone walking by notices tank, roommate complains to someone about it or even just mentions it, you or roommate have someone in the room and they see it and it gets told from one person to the next. Someone involved in something illegal and they search rooms...All these things have happened here, especially the girlfriend/boyfriend gets mad and breaks up and rats you out...that's how I picked up a milksnake viv and all real cheap! Plan ahead, so you aren't out scrambling if and when the time comes.
