trouble shedding

Hexadeci

Paranoid After Midnight
Any ideas for helping the hatchlings get sheds started? My baby's been in the clear phase (after the eyes turn blue and then clear up) for almost a week now, rubbing his head on everything. He hasn't eaten in about two weeks (since I won't feed him in blue because of the risk of regurge). He's rubbing his poor head on everything making no headway :duck:. Any ideas? I don't have any bark hides or anything (might have to get one now).

O beautiful! I just watched him get the nose off! How cool is that? But still I worry about this shed...I put him back in his main viv and I'll give him some privacy. We shall see!

I'm sure I'm being a bit of a worry-wart, but it's just that this is only his 4th shed with me, and he hasn't eaten in so long. I can see him getting tired after a rubbing attempt, so I'm worrying he's just running out of energy from hunger. Which makes him take longer, which means longer until he can eat.

Add to that the underside of his tail, which is either continuing to color up ...or is getting scalerot. I can't tell, and I can't get a clear enough picture. Gah.

I might try the bath as a last resort. He's one of those Freak Out When Wet. Darts about in the water, won't calm down, and ends up sneezing so many times after I'm surprised he didn't come down with a respiratory infection. And it's been pretty humid around here. It just rained, room humidity is (apparently) 58%.

Here's the clearest image I could get of his tail (pre shed). Maybe you can see where the belly color starts to get off-white, but isn't the black checkers that are normal. Even the black checkers are irregular and blurry enough that if there was scalerot around them, I don't think I could tell the difference.

Instead of a bath you could soak a wash cloth (make sure it is room temp) and put in the bottom of a plastic container. Put him in there and let him hang out on the wet wash cloth for a few minutes and the shed should come right off. I just did this a couple of weeks ago with my young lavender and it worked like a charm!

I prefer the wet washcloth/towel method as well. The surface of the cloth gives them something to burrow into and rub against, plus it might be easier on the ones that hate being in water.

With a really stubborn shed, I leave them in the tub with the wet cloth for a couple of hours if necessary. I put the tub back into their normal tank, so that it stays warm (just to one side of the UTH, not on top of it).
