ultra amel mot x normal caramel

old question but i forgot if you can get ultras from ultra amel x normal, any probalility chart appreciated.Chris :shrugs:

Ultra's don't just randomly appear. In order to get homozygous ultras from a clutch both parents must be homo or het for ultra. Breeding an ultramel mot x normal will do nothing but produce 50% normals het amel and motley, and 50% normals het ultra motley.

Or in list form:

Ultramel X Ultra = half ultras, half ultramels
Ultramel X Ultramel = half ultramels, some ultras, some amels
Ultramel X Amel = half ultramels, half amels
Ultramel X Normal = normals het ultra or amel (but not both)

And of course...
Ultra X Ultra = all ultras
Ultra X Amel = all ultramels
Ultra X Normal = all normals het ultra

thanks

anyone descibed this gene? seems (neither or either)recessive or co-dom. then again humans of color seem to produce percentage of color 1st generation when bred to fair skin individuals. no offense to anyone just an observation, unless we are Het ........L8r..........C :sidestep:

Human skin color is polygenic, so it would not be a good comparison to Ultra, which is a simple Mendelian trait.

Ultra resides at the same locus as amel, which is how ultramels come to be: they are heterozygous ultra/amel at the amel locus.

A gene cannot be recessive or codominant in a vacuum, those two things are relationships, so asking if ultra is codominant is like asking if five is equal to. ;) Ultra is recessive to its wild-type allele and codominant to the amel allele. :)

Yep. Short answer is it's codominant to amel, recessive to normal. Put ultra with amel, you get a snake that's inbetween both morphs (ultramel). It's predictable, so it's not too far off from most traits you're used to.

BTW, Snopes had an article you might find interesting:

I'm trying to get this thing myself. So would I be right in saying that if I bred a butter to a golddust. Half would be butters and half golddusts?

Ultra X amel . . .

These beauties hatched yesterday. I bred what I thought was an ultramel motley to a striped sunglow. Unbeknownst to me, the motley was actually an ultra. Hence, all babies are ultramel and striped motley. This exemplifies the "ultimate" value of the ultra gene. Of course, now all these babies are capable of producing striped ultras/ultramels.

Thanx, Kat . . .

IF I "got it", I hope it's contagious. Thanx.

I have 33 eggs yet to hatch from ultramel motley X ultramel motley so there'll be about a half dozen ultra motlies in there. That'll put me in the fast lane with this gene. Can't keep 'em all so I'll be selling ultramel AND ULTRA motlies this year. Stay tuned . . . . . . . . .

Er... Don? I was talking to NI GUY. Hatching season got you overworked? :bounce:

Congrats on the ultra mots, by the way. I've got an ultra caramel myself, but he's only het motley. I've also got about half a dozen ultramel-morph projects to raise up now. ;) I need to slow down on my new snake acquisitions... But there's so many pretty morphs out there!
