UTH problems

CodeRed

Critter Creeper
I've run into a problem that could end up hurting my snakes, and it's got me pretty worried. My room is usually around 78- 84 degrees, depending on whether it's day or night. This causes my rheostat to flip out, and leave my tanks from 90-113 degrees, and once it even went up to 130 degrees. Now, I KNOW this is too hot, the problem is is hot to fix it? I can't afford to buy three good thermostats, at least not right at the moment. Call me anything you want, a good thermostat for all three is simply out of the question. Maybe in a month or two I'll have the money, but for now it's simply not possible. For the moment, the snakes are in small tanks inside of their normal vivs, so they still get some belly heat, just not as intense. This might last for a week or two, but two of my snakes simply do not fit well in these tanks. One of them is actually in his feeding tub (about a 4 gallon Critter Keeper)... So, my question is would it be alright to simply shut off the tank heaters during the summer months (Just until August, maybe), then turn it back on in the fall, when my room starts falling back to the 70's? By then I definitely should have what I need to make them comfortable, but for now it's simply a huge hassle to make everything go right.

If you tell me this is a bad idea, that's okay. I'm just running out of ideas. :awcrap:

If the UTHs are the same size/make and the three tanks have the same setup, then you can use a multiway adaptor and have one thermostat controlling all three UTHs (check the spec to make sure you don't exceed the stat's maximum load, but I'm doing it with mine without problems).

At the moment, it sounds like any stat will do - don't push yourself to buy something top-of-the-line. I've always used the cheapest on/off stats available here in the UK and they've done good service for me. I've had one malfunction in 20 years.

As long as your room is up to at least 80 during the day and doesn't fall below 75 at night, turning the heat off is an option.

What rheostat are you using? The temp in my bedroom fluctuates but my UTHs (on rheostats) usually never stray more than +/- 5 degrees.

I think u have the same problem as me.. My room temp is hot.. So my uth turned so hot that it even cracked the glass.. Their advise was to turn it off..
