Very Inactive, maybe just worrying too much

Hey Everyone,

I got my corn about 3 days ago, and he/she is very inactive.

For example, i went to bed and checked on him/her before i went to sleep, and the snake was lying on the cool side of the tank, out in the open. I woke up in the morning, and he/she was in the exact same spot, about 6-8 hours later.

After checking just to make sure he/she was alive, he/she slithered about my hand, and is generally very friendly. But when put back into the viv, it doesnt really matter where he/she is, the snake will cruise for a bit and then just lie wherever for hours and hours. Is this normal? He/she is about 12-14 inches, I just want to make sure that he/she is ok.

It does not look like the snake is in blue, he/she is a normal, so it should be easy to tell, correct?

Does the snake have substrate to burrow in, hides to hide under, water to drink, and correct temperatures? It seems unusual to me that it would just hang out in the open. Mine always cruise and then hide. Very rarely they will hang out in the open, and if they were doing that a lot I would be worried about them. That's my limited experience of 2 snakes though, so I could be wrong.

yes, she( i have just decided to refer to her as a she for now lol) has reptibark, plenty to burrow under, a hide on the warm side and a hide on the cool side. She also has a water bowl large enough to swim in if she wanted to, and a climb made out of kinex for now lol

Have you checked the temps to make sure the gradient is appropriate?

Other than that, I would suggest not handling for a few days. If you just got the snake three days ago, it really needs some time to adjust to its new environment and destress. Maybe try different hides? Toilet paper rolls or small boxes work wonderfully...I've had a couple picky snakes that just didn't like the hides I'd bought, but love small boxes and rolls. (the hides were a bit roomy for their size...they liked smaller spaces that they had to squeeze into)

When you get a new snake, it's a good idea to leave it alone for a good 5-7 days before handling or feeding. The behavior you are describing is very normal for a corn, especially a new one, even once he settles in he will probably prefer to spend most of his time hiding in the same spot for a long time. The other posters also gave great advice!

One thing that also may help is adding a lot of ground cover, like fake vines and foliage. Getting a good layer of plants seems to make the snakes a lot more confident about coming out. I would say your snake is just settling in though. He's had a big life change and needs some time to de-stress. :)

Thanks guys :D

She is lying in her hide on the warm side now, I have been trying to relax and let her relax lol, but she is so still for hours on the cool side that I think she could be dead, which would be sad for me, she is such a nice snake lol

You'll get used to it...

...or you will get more snakes so you always have one out to look at! :)

She is still being very lethargic, I put her on the heat side, but she seems not to want any of that even though she felt cold. Is she ok?

Snakes will generally feel cool to the touch...a human's body temperature runs much warmer than a snake's ;) And my snakes almost always prefer their cool side to their warm unless their digesting.

Snakes should feel cool to you. They have a lower body temperature.

Snakes don't move much. I will go days or sometimes weeks without seeing much of a snake.

Snakes aren't very active pets. They are cold-blooded animals, and will stay stark still for hours/days at a time to preserve energy.
