Waterfall

I was thinking about purchasing this waterfall for my terrarium... I was told it would increase humidity and sound really nice. Would it stress the snake out, or do you guys think it would be suitible decor for the tank?

I don't think it would bother the snake any... but depending how big a tank you have, the constantly running water would probably raise your humidity too much. Also, most of the waterfalls you buy from stores would be a real pain to clean after your snake decides to use it for a toilet one day ;) If you decide to try it, make sure you get one that
a: doesn't have large holes for the water to get to or come from the pump... you don't want your snake getting into the pump! and
b: make sure it's not a sealed unit--- that is, make sure you can take the pump out to make cleaning easier.

I have just ordered the zooMed waterfall for my snakes and one for the ghekkos. Some people say you should also buy water-cleaner to add to the waterfall (I guess to prevent algae etc) It doesnt harm your snake apparantly but I'm not going to bother. The only thing I worry about is humidity getting too high.

Puzzled

hehe, definately have no idea what I would do if they pooped in it. I think I'll hold off for now, was just loving the idea of the sound of water. I was going to test it out in my python cage for now and see how it worked for when my corns got bigger. I ended up constructing a 4x2x2 enclosure with working electricity and sliding glass door fronts for my python, and on top I'm planning on building doulbe decker corn terrariums for my little guys. (not for a while though). So was just thinking of options for decor. Thanks for the info though!

I know it's not really the same, but you could always put one nearby, just for the ambience... or even place it somwhere where you can see it through the glass, but it's not actually in the enclosure.

They come with cleaning instructions. I know alot of people who have the waterfalls and they have no prbs with them (even when ur snake does poop in it). I dont see the big problem...is your snake poos...take the waterfall out and clean it! Simple no?! :D
ps to clean all you do is pump fresh water through.

Soak in utility tub w/ bleach

If I were trying to clean it out well, I'd take the pump out and soak the whole unit in a utility tub with some bleach over night. A $6 Sterlite container would work too.

yeah

I certainly wouldn't just let water run through. That;s disgusting. I have waterfalls other places in my home, and I would be totally grossed out if a snake pooped in the lower area especially. Because then all the crap would be running through the pump and out again. Yuck. I guess its alright if its only for your snake though. Just a little to dirty for my tastes!

My fiancee wanted me to get a zoomed waterfall for my corn, but like y'all have said, it would be a pain to clean, the only thing I can think of is soaking in in a bleach solution and then running the bleach solution through the pump after for a while. It just sounded like too much hassle. I spend enough time cleaning my cages already.

rainey

Yeah thats what I mean. The corn might never poop in them but man can you imagine a corn that poops in it every time? Ugh. The cleaning time would be far more than I have.

:)

I was also thinking, in the ZooMed waterfall, the hole for the water is about 1/2 an inch wide, imagine if a corn got in there? I cant even imagine!

actually

I was looking at my waterfall here in the house. It's not made speciafically for reptiles but same thing.

Anyways, another issue I am wondering about would be the cord? How would you have the cord running out of the tank to the outlet? Anyone already have this?

bmm

I dont have it yet but have seen it in a set up. The cord is treated like any other cord you would have coming out your viv. For you people whe just have UTH or dont have lights then its different, But for those of you who have already made holes to allow for cables then this is how you would treat the cable.
PS Maybe its disgusting for us thinking about corn poo but I'm sure your corn doesn't mind as long as its cleaned. Personally I dont think its that much extra hassle...you have to clean stuff anyway and for me, one extra item wont make much difference! ;)

well

Maybe for you it won't make much differance! But for me, I honestly couldn't clean out tiny waterfalls parts and peices, and make sure they are sterile for all of my snakes :)! :) I wouldn't have time to do anything else!

Anyways, I am not sure what other cords anyone would have coming out of the tank or rubbermaid. But I guess if you have a hole cut already.....

:)

I have my heat mat cords coming out, lighting cord coming out and soon the waterfall! I guess it would be hard if you keep heaps of snakes but I only have 3, and they will share a waterfall so not much difference to me! :D

Probably be okay for adult corns... but can you imagine a hatchling? Say the power goes out, or you turn off the water fall for some reason, and the snake finds the pump access... "hmm... small, dark, a little moist... must be a new humid hide!"... and then, it gets turned back on... :p

Also, remeber that the household type usually aren't made to be cleaned easy, or deal well with any obstructions (so if shavings, bark, or other substrate get into it... or snake poop... it could kill the pump).

Dawn

No I wouldnt use one for a hatchling although seeing as they are recommended for reptiles I would assume they have taken precautions against that happening. PS the zoomed isn't a household one its specifically for reptiles so is easily dismantled to wash etc. I would never use any old garden one...

Just

So you know, things that are "made for reptiles" aren't governed by any sort of laws or regulations making sure they are suitable for reptiles. If I decide to start selling a "reptile dip" made from water and say butter (lol) that I claim works for shedding, I can sell it as such and label it "good for reptiles". Many many items in the pet store that are "recommended" for reptiles are actually deadly and/or worthless. Especially in the pet stores. Including cali-sand, hot rocks, shedding aid (worthless), vitamin spray (worthless) and the list goes on and on. But anyways I just wanted to make sure everyone is very careful, because when it says "tested for reptiles" or "made for reptiles" it does not mean a reptile was ever even tested with it, nor does it mean it is safe. :)
