Hey. My cornsnakes has been laying eggs all week and just laid the last one today. So i got a mouse for her to eat. I killed it and threw it in the tank for her but her mouth was stuck shut! What happend? It seems that the hole where her tounge comes out was sealed. She hadent had water all week long and was just staying in her hide laying eggs. So my dad went a got a dropper of water and dripped on on her lips and that seemed to make her mouth open. After that she just left the mouse and got a drink then ate it. But what do you think happend? Thanks. BTW- when i fed her i took the male out so she could eat. But then i put the male back in when she was done and he went into the hide with her but she seemed VERY pissed off. She started hissing at him. But the wierd thing is they have been housed together for thier whole lives ( 4 years). When do you think i can put the guy back in with the female? Thanks.

Im not sure about the mouth thing, but your female will be very terratorial whilst she has her eggs. You can remove the eggs and incubate them elsewhere if you want to put the male back in. Remember, snake dont stay together as a 'couple' for life so she will have viewed the male as a threat to her eggs!
Hope that helps.

yes

What Rachel said is correct.

Snakes do NOT stay together for life in the wild. Yet another reason you shouldn't keep snakes together.

She is territorial because she doesn't want to deal with the male anymore. She had laid her eggs and wants rest. And he is most likely Stressing her out.

It's "nice" they have lived together for four years but normally its NOT good for corns to live together and often causes undesirable results. I.E. your snake hissing and being stressed.

Is it true that can be driven to cannibalism if they feel threatened enough by other tank mates too?

well

I am fairly sure they don't eat each other over territory, but instead just plain hunger. But snakes do weird things.

Younger corns especially babies can eat each other and there is plenty of photo and written evidence to prove this. Older corns don't often do this, but keeping them together causes another, more likely situation which is stress.

I suppose it depends on the snake too. Mine live happily together, they curl up together even although they have a huge tank with about 10 hides (its been made 2 storey now...thanks dad!).

Well....it's not really a matter or curling up together..
the reason why they are together is because they both find that the best hiding spot with both temperature and humidity level the best is that spot. Because of that, both of them would be there...thus resulting in curling up....if they had a choice, I would think that they want to be separate.....even if they have two stories now..(very interesting idea...)

But IMHO I would separate them. Hissing at one another is already a sign of stress and anger....

Thanks guys. But do you have any idea what was with the whole mouth being stuck shut? It scared the crap out of me. But the water did the trick. Also when she oped her mouth she had allot of saliva. Its not mouthrot because i checked for all of the telltale signs.
