i have a norm corn and a japanese rat, i keep them both on the plastic green fake grass type matts, but think these increse the smell, they are also anoying to clean. all the books+ other people have different ideas so i thought i'd ask here.
 
I'd say aspen too
they are cheap and easy to clean
looks not too bad and you can get them everywhere!

I use aspen now since my snake likes to tunnel in it but honestly plain old paper towels were much easier on me. Easy to spot the poop, easy to replace, easy to do a full cage clean. Oh well, my snake likes the aspen so that's what i'll use.
 
Yet another vote for aspen - cheap, looks nice, covers up bad smells pretty well, and is fun for the snakes to tunnel in. Gotta keep 'em happy, after all. :)
 
I Use repti-bark, and someone recomended me to use coconut bark! i.ve used it in a small tank of mine! where i've got a snake witch i think could be sick!

I don't like the coconut bark, it is to crumbly, dusty and doesn't look as good as the repti-bark! now i have a really big bag of coconutbark witch i wont use anymore!!! cost about 35.- euro

I would like to know what aspen shaving is!!
