looks like...

a hybrid...maybe some hybrid of a kingsnake. I'm not sure what the eye color has to do with it but I'd bet its NOT from South Africa.... What did you pay for it? It is had to really tell anything from the pics.

I'm not sure BUT...

I could swear that someone posted almost an identical post/inquiry like this one last year. I'll never find it in the old forums of websites I may have seen it on but I am pretty sure that most people did not take that person's post seriously at the time.

Could it be an interesting coincidence...maybe both people bought at the same pet store. Who knows?! What store was it?

Besides, maybe it is something rare...I certainly no nothing about South African colubrids (if any even exist) nor would I pretend to...I just thought it could be some sort of hybrid since it resembles others I've seen.

I still don't get it...WHY do people just automatically assume something is a hybrid? I mean, it very well may be, but without more info we can't just assume that it is.

As for eye color...I simply wanted to be able to tell Joe if it is indeed an albino. In the pictures, it appears to have a bit of brown around its saddles, so I wasn't even sure if it is an albino.

Joe, please get some clearer pictures, and maybe a close-up of it's head.

those pics are on the way. i did not buy the snake it was passed down to me from a friend when it was young but the store it was bought from is not a big store of any sort. in a town called codner in derbyshire, uk.

I am convinced they do not know what they are talking about. i know it is a bit off the subject but i saw a bermese in that store the other day and they are not looking after it very well. i could see the parrasites jumping off it and also looked like it had lost a lot of weight. i would not normally go there but its the only place within many miles that sells decent mice, the other stores mice are always manky.

i will post a new thread when i have some better pics.

Most people, like myself, assume a snake is a hybrid based on what they've seen for sale at shows or on the net in the past.
While it may be incorrect at times, basing a hybrid on looks is really the only way to tell unless you contact the breeder directly.

I agree that better pics would be needed to accurately identify it but if I were joedr, I would contact the pet store owner and ask if they could somehow track the original breeder/wholesaler if concerned about its unknown origin/history. Time/effort may very well be better spent this way in determining its correct phenotype.

Whenever anyone speculates about what a snake might possibly be on these forums, its always their opinion and should be taken with a grain of salt. Most of the time, especially with low quality photos (no offense), any opinion is very loosely based.

Either way, looks like joedr has a nice, new pet that seems to have found a good home.

Ive never ever heard of a South African red albino corn here in SA as i live here,i also think it has some brown but a better pic will help plz:)

I totally agree about my pics, no offence taken.

i am going to get some better pics tommorow. i took the last ones quickly.

i would contact the store only but from some of the info i have already got from them i dont think i will bother.

they firstly told me that i should feed the snake as much as the snake wanted to eat. - i find out i should only be feeding him 1-2 mice per week (this is why he is chubby)

next the tell me he is a south african red albino corn snake.

i saw one of the snakes in there and it had mites jumpin off it and looked in very bad shape.

they have a monkey in a cage there. I have means to believe many complaints have been put in about the store and they have been inspected several times.

I only go there because it is the only one within quite a distance (this one is not close either)

If it would have been me buying my snake i would not have got it from there.
