what's a troll?

I can't type...
This isn't in dire need of answering, but it's been bothering me because I can't figure it out. I've been seeing the term "troll" being used with reference to some accounts....what IS a troll exactly?

*perplexed*

A troll is someone who deliberately makes annoying or pointless posts on a message board, with the intention of taking up other board members' time and technical/mod/admin resources.

It's basically juvenile attention-seeking.

Wikipedia said:
An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial messages in an on-line community such as an on-line discussion forum with the intention of baiting other users into responding emotionally[1].[2] The rise of the expression "concern troll" reflects an expanded definition of troll as someone whose posts have the primary goal of disrupting or de-railing an internet community. "Troll" is also used in a broader pejorative sense to question the good faith of any Internet user who has annoyed the person using the term.

Hope that helps.

oooohh. Well, that makes sense. I wasn't sure if it had to do with people joining to spam their websites or something else. Thank you for defining that for me :)

I've always thought of the word troll from the fishing technique of trolling. You put out a line with or without bait and troll, or drive the boat, until something bites your hook. A troll in the sense of the internet is similar in that someone throws out a line of "controversy" waiting for someone to bite the hook thereby causing unrest.

The boorish troll images are fairly accurate as well! :)
