When to go to hoppers?

howiet4702

Wanted: Jasper Co Okeetee
All of my 04 hatchlings are now on fuzzies. When do I move up to hoppers? I have about 30 large pinky's left that are pretty much useless to me now. I don't want to feed 3 pinks per feeding just to get rid of them. I don't think it's a good idea since they are now on fuzzies. Anywho, when is it time to go to fuzzies? They eat once per week. Here is a pic of Frosty. Should I move to 2 fuzzies a week?

I always heard that it is time to move up to the next mouse size when feeding does not leave a buldge.

I don't have an answer for you other than what was already said, but that's a great looking snake. In the "least favorite morphs" thread, I listed snows as one of mine, but that one would make me reconsider...is there any pink or yellow on it anywhere?

Again, sorry I can't help you with your question...I was in a similar situation wondering when to move from hoppers to adults. Somebody told me on here that the snake wouldn't eat it if it was too big, so just to offer it and see how it goes. That doesn't quite sound right to me because it sorta implies (in my mind anyway) something along the lines of "maybe it'll regurge, maybe it won't...try it and see." Maybe somebody else can clarify that...

How long does it take for the bulge to disappear?

I believe the 'ideal' amount of time is just under two days...and thus the two day handling rule

If the bulge of his current meal size is pretty much gone in a day, then you can move up to the next prey size (taking into consideration the whole 1 and 1/2 times diameter rule of course  )

hope that helps

Yes, take a look under the Photo Gallery section and you will see about 4 pics of her. ("This is the kind of snow I like") She also has a lot of pink and some nice colored green that is starting to come in. Take a look in the gallery and let me know what you think.

It usually takes about two days for the lump to disappear. I thought about going up to 2 fuzzies a feeding.

Any other thoughts on this? When should I move to hoppers? All my 04's are on two fuzzies every 6 days.

JMO Howie, but my '04's are eating 2 fuzzies every 7 days and it leaves a good size bulge. They are growing like weeds. My jungle, however, is a late '03/early '04 (we are not sure), and she is ALOT bigger than my June/July '04s. I've just moved her to hoppers and it took her awhile to get it down and it left a sizeable lump. You might keep your '04s on fuzzies for awhile until they bulk up. Check their girth and measure it against the girth of a hopper. They're much bigger than a fuzzie. Again, just my opinion, and take it with a grain of salt, all corns are different. :wavey:

i have an 04 okeetee from kathy love that was knocking out a crawler every 7 days or 2 every 12 days. He's everybit of 2feet, probably more. I've never seen a snake grow like this one has. I honestly think he had his mind set on making breeding season this year. He'll definately be more than ready to go next year.

My 24" WC Miami eats two live fuzzies every week. I tried a live rat pinky yesterday, and she refused that. Then she refused a f/t mouse fuzzy that I tried, to see if she'd eat f/t fuzzies. But she is doing just fine on the two live fuzzies every week. It would be cheaper for me to be able to buy a hopper, but I don't want to chance the snake getting injured, since she'll only eat live. Two fuzzies is fine. Three or four fuzzies would probably be fine, if the snake is much more than 24 inches or so. I was surprised my Okeetee wanted the rat pinky after finishing the rat fuzzy, but he attacked it about 2 seconds after I put it in his cage. He'd probably eat 6 or 7 mouse fuzzies, if he had the chance. If anything, gram for gram, fuzzies are supposed to have more of what makes snakes 'grow' than either pinkies or older mice. Usually it ends up being cheaper to feed one larger meal instead of 3 or 4 fuzzies, even though the fuzzies might have more nutritional value.

I'd bump it to two fuzzies. I give both of my corns two fuzzies, and my normal shoujdl really be one hoppers. it is way small for it's age, I mean I've seen other peoples snakes the same age same size, but I dont know. It's a year and 9 months and only on several fuzzies or hopper, I dontkonw how that is but whatever. my 10 month eats 2 fuzzies adn is 11 months younger.

2 Fuzzies

She is getting big! From the looks of the picture there is a nice bulge. When you don't notice much of a bulge, you might consider two fuzzies. It is mostly a guessing game. It might stress here out with two but that is for her to decide.
Keep up the good work. She looks great!

Thanks Larry!

I already moved her up to two large fuzzies a week. She eats like a champ and is the calmest snake I currently have. Her brother, the Amel, still thinks he is king of the house. He is always in the strike position until I pick him up. He is doing great too. She is definately much bigger than him.

BTW everyone, I brought these great snakes off of Larry back in the middle of January and I have never had a problem with them.

I highly recommend Larry as a breeder.
