Whole Lotta Garter Snakes

My parents wanted to show me something at their house but they wouldn't tell me what. I came over and they led me to the woodpile, threw back the tarp, and HOLY CRAP! There were 10 or more garter snakes under there. I didn't know garter snakes were communal critters until tonight. Wikipedia also taught me that garter snakes give birth to live young! They're also slightly venomous. Wow. They're cooler snakes than I thought.

Hehe, I haven't seen a garter this year yet. My cats usually attack them and try to play with them on the front pourch so I have to rescue them. They are such calm little animals, they'd make awesome pets I bet, but I wouldn't take one from the wild, is mean :(

So what color is your new garter snake?

I can't say I wasn't tempted. They were all so cute. I just don't have a tank for one and they seemed pretty content in their woodpile home. It was funny because my parents wanted me there when they got some wood out of the pile "just in case." I guess having a corn snake means I can protect people from wild snakes... right?

So I helped them move some logs and made sure no snakes were crushed in the process. They weren't helping us much in that regard. They didn't want to leave at all! So I'm trying to move stuff with my step-dad and my mom's about 10 feet away and she keeps screaming, "OMG THAT ONE'S HEADING STRAIGHT FOR YOU!! WATCH OUT!!!" I'd look down and some cute little snake would be looking up at me like, "why are you messing up my home?" I felt kinda bad for them. We pulled the tarp back over them afterwards.

That's when I looked them up on wikipedia. I was curious why so many snakes would be together like that. I had no idea garters lived in communities. I also didn't know they have a mild neurotoxin that's secreted from their back teeth or that they don't lay eggs. That's some really cool stuff. I guess I already said that, though.

Hmm... I've been browsing garter snake pictures on the web and I'm starting to wish I'd gotten some pictures of the ones I saw. They were extremely dark compared to how garters typically look. Close up, you could see the side stripes, but they were very muted. I suppose the snakes are still there. I should bring a camera out to the woodpile sometime. It'd be easy to get some close up pictures. They weren't very shy.

Kurogamii, how do you think corns came to be captive bred ;)

All animals were wild at some point, I just am going into rehabilitation..so I don't like taking an animal from the wild unless I can help it and put it back ._. My corn I'm getting is bred in a house, SO MUAHAHAHA...
