Why would he do this

Ceasar has 2 hides 1 hollow rock and 1 skull usually the hollow rock is on the warm side and the skull on the cold. I recently switched that position and moved the rock to the cold side which is about 70 degrees F. I had down it previously but at that time the cold side was in the mid 60s. Ceasar will choose the hide over ideal temperature....why is this? I fed him yesterday and he usually makes a b-line to get as close to the heat pad as possible but since his rock was on the cold side he chose the hide instead

Hide preference is shown because the instinct to stay safe from predators, is stronger than his instinct to be at the correct temperature. It implies that the hide he doesn't use, doesn't make him feel safe when he's inside it. You could maybe look at replacing it with something more enclosed where he can feel that he's better hidden.

Ok thanks that makes sense
