Wind Serpents 2016 planned pairings

Dragonling

Doesn't do "casual"
This will be my first official breeding season! I was going to wait to post this when I got a confirmed lock, but getting a little roughed up in transit has triggered a shed in one of my girls so I figured I'd post in the mean time.

1. Foxtrot - "mystery peach phase" hypo lavender motley w/unknown hets x London - hypo lavender het amel : London is from an ongoing hypo lav/opal project focused on enhancing the pink background color. Fox was produced by Rich Hume, from his mystery line. There's a chance he might be het amel. I'm hoping for some very colorful hypo lavender het motley babies.

2. Ziggy - tessera het lava phet lavender amel stripe x Sierra - masque red factor het diffused diamond: This pairing is still tentative, depending on how quickly Sierra recovers from her RI and if she is still receptive in late April or early May. I will be loaning Ziggy from DuxorW.

I found evidence of a possible lock between Fox and London last night. Of course silly me just couldn't leave them without water, so I added a heavy ceramic water bowl. They didn't move the bowl, but knocked the paper towel into it! But one edge had a yellowish spot that looked...sticky. Here's hoping babies are on the way!

London is in her pre-lay shed now and has hunkered down in her lay box. I gave her a small weanling mouse today, and I will probably only offer one more small meal before she lays. Got one last rat fuzzy waiting for her after that. :) Here's hoping she doesn't slug out!

They lack a certain roundness I would expect from viable eggs, but it could be a while yet before she lays. I've still not been able to count them at all.

I meant to add this a while ago, but the pairing with Sierra is out since the poor girl is still sick. I was hoping to find another lavender or hypo to pair Fox with, but at this point we're just going to wait for next year. I'm hoping to have 2-3 ladies ready to go by then. :)

Then again...

I counted at least 9 that look plump and dry. She's still working on the last one, going to give her a little bit while I set up the incubator and then try a gentle massage. My vet is ready for her if she can't get it out.

Oops, make that 8. :) One hiding underneath was a slug. Still, I expected nothing BUT slugs, so I'm pretty happy right now! Mama is super thin, going to offer a couple large peach fuzzies later tonight and save the last rat pup for when she has a bit more strength.

Thanks, folks. The wait for her to lay was bad enough...I fear I will go mad before they hatch! I'm a little disappointed to only have a handful of eggs this year, but it could have been worse. I think this will be a good test for now since I will have at least 3-4 girls ready to go next year.

wow :) I barely know anything about snake breeding but you guys always make it seem fascinating :) Hope everything goes well with the little ones

I candled the eggs today, and I won't lie, I'm a tiny bit disappointed. Several show no veins at all and are likely infertile...something to be expected with such a late pairing, but it's somehow worse than getting slugs. A couple show some promise, but I expect them not to fully develop. One little egg has fantastic veining and I can see the shadow of the embryo. If this one baby makes it, I will be thrilled!

Next year pairings will begin just after the new year, especially since I don't plan to brumate.

I'm so glad you have one confirmed embryo. I hope a few more make it, but I understand you need to not get your hopes overly high.

Three eggs are trucking along, though I'm seeing some minor dimpling in one of them this week despite ~80%+ humidity. I'm only on day 36 at 80-81°F so I can't imagine they're anywhere near ready to pip just yet. I laid a slightly damp paper towel over the eggs for now. Hopefully the one will bounce back. The rest of the infertiles are sinking in quite a bit, with some looking quite sad and dehydrated. Fortunately I haven't seen any traces of mold just yet.

Two of the three good eggs (which I originally thought were infertile) were beginning to dimple pretty badly, but after adding water to the hatchrite along the edges of the container they are now filling out again. I think the substrate just dried out too quickly since I have the tub sitting open for now. Hopefully those two will still make it.
