Zig-zag or Aztec?

This is my Corn Snake Pip... I got him from a reptile show at the weekend.. I was drawn to him because of his pattern but.. is it an Aztec? or a Zig-zag? or neither and just a freaky one off? Do you think that his pattern is genetic? :shrugs:

Cheers,
Chez

firstly what did you buy him as ? if he is a zig zag/aztec from breeding i am sure the person you bought him of would let you know - the other thing is aztecs/zigzags dont always breed true. Its possible to have a couple of zig-zags breed and get normal patterned offspring out. If you really want to find out your'll need to do a few breeding trials - to get a aztec from aztec parents go to www.ecorep.co.uk and ask philip draper for one - very nice snakes

An interesting pattern. Is it male or female?

I agree with Limey that the pattern 'trait?' is not always easily reproduced, however, I am also attracted to the unusual patterning, thus, I have purchased a trio of Aztec/ Zigzag's this year.

Here are some photo's of mine for you to compare.

Its a male... he wasn't sold as an anything except for as a Corn Snake.. he came out of a litter of Amels and Snows and some pretty normal looking normals!

I also posted on another forum... and the general consensus seems to be he is not an aztec and he is not a Zig-zag.. he has funky cubing down his neck then the pattern is totally random.. and its probably genetic... but I guess only time will tell! ;)

I want to try and breed his pattern into my Stripes and my Motleys! :D

Chez

ps.. nice snakes... I am a sucker for unusual patterned Corns too! ;)

Aztec and Zigzag are broad classes of patterning, not specific idetified genes. A lot of individuals show patterns that are between zig and aztec type patterns, or that are part zigzag, part aztec.

The one you posted has basically a zigzaggy back end, with a bunch of sets of two saddles connecting. The front end looks similar to the aztec found in some lavenders and lavender hets. :)
